I am afraid you are wrong about the Lotus and fooling yourself about 
the Delorean... The Lotus also uses many standard engine and 
transmission parts... not to mention just about everything else... 
low volume cars cannot justify everything being custom designed 
parts.
As you see with the Porsche/Audi Volkswagen and to a greater extent 
maybe Delorean and Renault the Lotus Renault relationship was also 
strong as well as with many other UK car manufacturers... 
With any exotic you just need to know where to look for the parts 
you need.
Delorean maintenance is not cheap as evidenced by the number of 
truely horrid examples out there...
