Subject: Wanna see your car in the 2004 DeLorean calendar?

We're getting ready to start working on the 2004 DeLorean calendar, and
are requesting that photos be submitted as soon as possible.  Many of you
have had a chance to get your cars out to various shows this summer, and
hopefully got the opportunity to take some great pictures as well.

If you'd like to submit your photos for consideration, please e-mail them
to GullwingMagazine(at)juno.com, and include your name, city in which you
live, city or brief explanation where the photo was taken, owner of car
(if not your own), and photographer (if someone other than yourself).
300 dpi or greater resolution and single car, peopleless photos
preferred.

Our goal is to have the calendar available well before Christmas with a
preview in the fall issue of GULLWING Magazine, so we're accepting photos
now.  Thanks for your prompt attention and participation.

BTW, if your photo is chosen, your calendar is FREE!  Remember... only 12
will make the cut, so send them in as soon as you can!

Thanks again,
Ron and Cheryl Wester

Subject: Stripe Removal

Good question.  But not to fear!!  My first car had the stripe on it and
I didn't like it.  Instructions I got from Don at DeLorean Motor Center
in CAlifornia were the following:   It is simply glued on, take a hair
dryer and start slowly by heating it up to loosen the glue.  Start
peeling....That's it.  If it does leave any residue on the car it is
easily removed with a blending pad that can be bought from any vendor or
use a green 3M  scotch brite pad.   I did it and it worked fine, you
would never tell it had a stripe

Good Luck

Thanks to those who responded, I will keep your emails and keep you
posted on the status of VIN #3954.

The bad news:  The service station where the car is located is
changing companies and the entire lot is going to be repaved so the
car must be out by next Friday.

The good news:  I have found a place to move the car to where it
won't be vandalized.  I spoke with PENNDOT and was told that they
will accept a notarized court order awarding ownership of an
abandoned car in a title transfer.

There's hope yet, now on to the court order.

I have pointed out the water drain tube in a photo I have in the
FILES section of YahooGroups.  It is called AC_Accumulator.jpg.
You'll note that mine is pointed down.  I did that.  When I first got
the car it was resting horizontally on the frame, and was also
plugged.

As for your coolant leak, you may want to check the heater hoses
coming out of the back of the engine, or the aluminum coolant pipe
where the ribbed heat stove pipe passes by it.  Its possible
vibration could have filed a pinhole leak into the coolant pipe.  It
did with my car.

shop.  What area were you looking in?  In any event email me directly if you are
in that area and would like the info.  I don't know how the shop is but he
said he worked on DeLoreans.  If you are having that type of engine trouble you
may want to make the trip to PJ Grady if it is deemed to be serious.

Before you go jumping to conclusions you might want to pull the valve
covers and try a valve adjustment. It isn't that difficult to do.
Unless the engine was overheated or the oil wasn't changed regularly
you shouldn't have anything too serious. In any case you will know as
soon as you pull the valve covers by the amount of gunk you find!
Ideally you should not see much but if you do then you might have a
lot of work. Depending on the mileage that the car has you might need
to replace the O2 sensor but in any case before you start get a set of
gaskets for the valve covers. If it's really gunked up then after you
reassemble buy a can of engine flush, run the motor for a while
(according the the instructions on the engine flush) and then change
the oil and filter.

Hello all -

I have a question about the fuel pump, what symptoms would the car
show if the fuel pump was inoperable?  Would you still be able to
drive the car?  Does the relay / fuse update alleviate any of these
symptons?

Subject: Re: Fuel Pump

In general terms, if the fuel pump is inoperable, the car is
temporarily a paperweight.  There are many reasons for fuel pump or
fuel delivery challenges, but one thing is certain ... the DeLorean is
very sensitive to adequate fuel flow.  The reasons for a
non-functioning fuel pump include a blown fuse (#7 I believe), RPM
relay, tripped inertia switch, pump power relay, corroded wires at the
top of the pump (my personal favorite), etc.  Fuel delivery is also
affected by the frequency valve, fuel pressure accumulator, fuel
filter, and any number of things in the fuel distributor.  If the car
will start using starting fluid, but will not continue to run on it's
own, the fuel system is suspect.  As you can see, it is then a matter
of tracking down the source of the trouble, starting with the specific
symptoms that you are experiencing.  Give the List some specifics, and
I'm sure somebody has "been there ... done that".  Good luck.

Subject: Re: Fuel Pump

If the fuel pump doesn't run the motor won't run. The fuel pump is the
only source of pressure for the fuel injection system and the fuel
injection system needs pressure. The relay and circuit breaker updates
are not for the fuel pump. The main problem in the fuse box area for
the fuel pump is the melting of the contacts for fuse # 7. If the pump
doesn't run check the grounding through the inertia switch. If that's
OK check for power at the pump. A bad relay is usually the problem.

Subject: New Tires finally on, and some Misc. Maint Items

I finally got my new Michelin Pilot's on today, WOW what a
difference.  They replaced my worn out Yokohama tires.  The Pilots
are a lot smoother and quieter than the Yokahama's were and the car
turns easier, although to be fair the Yokohama's were worn out when I
bought the car so I never got a chance to try them with good tread.
Do you rotate your tires side to side or just leave them where they
are for good?  Yesterday I got to put the car up on a friends new
lift.  Everything looked pretty clean under the car, I have a couple
tears in the tie-rod boots so they will have to be replaced, I think
I will pull the steering rack out and clean/re-grease it while I'm at
it.  I tightened all the body bolts that hold the body to the frame,
I was also hearing a Thunk when turning sharp once in a while.  All
but a couple were loose, I was able to access the passenger side rear
bolt through the air intake with the help of a swivel head spark plug
rachet.  When I removed the charcol canister to access the rear bolt
on the drivers side I found a vacume cap had come off on the canister
so I replaced it while I was there.  My front brakes have been
squeeking when you turn corners so I removed the front pads and
applied some Stop Squeek to the back of them, so far the squeek seems
to be gone now.  Today I'm going to replace all the fuses in the fuse
box and clean up the fuse terminals as preventive maint.  so
hopefully it won't melt down in the future.  How is the trunk carpet
suppose to be attached to the car?  Mine is just setting in the
bottom of the trunk but looks like it was once atached some how.
Just thought I would post what I've been doing for anyone who's
interested.  Tom C.

When I go to get new tires on Tuesday I assume that they are going to

way I am supposed to tell them to lift the car?  I would hate for
them to crack the fiberglass underbody or damage anything else.

Before you even do that, have someone familar with DeLoreans take a
look at it - I've seen MANY people mistake leaky exhaust manifold
gaskets for valve noise. I'd bet money that's what you are hearing.
For some reason the sound of the DMC with a leaky exhaust sounds a
lot like an old Chevy with a broken rocker arm.......

Another great import, the DeLorean DMC-12, with its stainless steel body and gull-wing doors was a limited production car brought to life by former GM guru John DeLorean. His company, with production facilities in Northern Ireland went bankrupt while the car experienced purported workmanship problems. This was all amid an infamous drug-buying scandal surrounding DeLorean and his attempts to save his company. A true â80s star car (remember the âBack to the Futureâ movies) produced between 1981 and 1983, it featured a rear engine and rear-wheel drive. The striking body design by Giugiaro of Turin, Italy, still looks modern some 20-plus years later. There are about 6,000 thought to still exist. Five years ago you could still buy a DeLorean for $12,000. Today youâre more likely to pay $18,000-$22,000. The DMC-12 is gaining in value annually.

I regularly travel the 220 mile trip between Akron Ohio and Niagara Falls. The car is well suited to the highway. This is  along legged car that's geared on the tall side. I find myself shifting into 5th in the neighborhood of 70mph at the end of the entrance ramps, and set the cruise to what ever the traffic will bear. You have to get used to the stares and the the gawkers pulling up along side and sliding back to get a better look. Every trip is different.

Subject: RE: Project Car Available

Shouldn't the station owner have a mechanics lein on the car? If so it's just a matter of paper work and the title should be his.

I'm not sure if the mods will let this through, so I'll try to be as
"legal" as possible.  For the past 2 weeks I've been collecting flux
capacitor photos in preparation to build the most accurate model
possible.  If anyone has or knows where to find ANY and all pictures
of them, even if they are not from the movie/movie cars, please feel
free to e-mail me: supermatty(at)psu.edu.  I will be putting up a
photo album with all of them in addition to in-progress photos when I
begin constructing it.  Thanks!

Subject: Clutch line replacement and cause of backfire?

I had my car running pretty well today considering I still have 6
injector seal leaks.

Just when I was taking it around the lot for a test drive, the clutch
went soft. I still have the old plastic line. I already intend to
replace it with the braided stainless one.

My question: Is this one of those "seperate the body from the frame"
projects?, or can you run it without doing that?

Mike C is bringing my seals and O-ring by tomorrow which is good. The
car is still back-firing or doing these tiny but sharp "sneezes" out
the exhaust pipe and/or back through the fuel/air mixture control
unit. It happens less as the engine gets hotter.

Is this a product of vacuum leaks, or should I be looking elsewhere?

Mike Cohee and I live in MD also. He's near Columbia and I'm in Crofton.

I've searched high and low and can't find anyone even willing to
discuss our cars. Mike had a gentleman who was capable but now refuses
to work on them. He says it's too time consuming and he's too backed up.

If this Lotus mechanic is still around I'd love to hear about it. I
think we're on our own though.

Like Dave T. says though, don't panic. Just pull the suspect valve
cover and check it out.

If you're really desperate, I might be persuaded to take a peek. I
just did a tear-down and head gasket job on my engine so it's still
fresh in my mind what's happening in there.
