The way the turbos are set up to work on the Island kit means thay have
to suck the air down through the metering flap exposing the impeller to
quite high vacuum (such is the nature of K-Jet). In a proper turbo
application, the metering flap should come AFTER the blower. I would
suspect your turbos simply because that was the last thing you toyed
with. However, I know one thing that will blow clouds of white smoke
that isn't particularly smelly and that's a ruptured brake servo causing
brake fluid to be drawn down the vacuum line and burnt in the engine.
I've seen it on a Right-hander with a secondary servo in the rear.

Subject: Re: Re: Fuel injector cleaners in gas tank ----Noooooo don't do it!
I would like to share my experiences on this subject.
One must have an understanding in how to use the fuel injector cleaner. I
have used fuel injector cleaner in my DeLorean and other cars every 1,000 miles
with no problems.
One thing to keep in mind is NOT to let the fuel cleaner to sit over a day's
time in the fuel tank and the system. One should plan to use the mixed
solution right away, such as in a long trip that is nonstop. This way, all of the
mixed solution will be consumed in the tank. This process will allow the
cleaner in the fuel to work its work moderately and not to over clean by removing
the varnish, sludge and other fuel waste by product in concentrated amounts as
it will do when it just sits in the tank for a period of time over a day.
I have traveled close to 90,000 miles using cleaner every 1,000 miles since
my ownership of my DeLorean with no problems with fuel injector cleaner. I do
feel a difference after using it -- The engine does run better.

Subject: door issues
I just got my doors all fixed with a new Lockzilla and solenoids and a
keyless entry and it works perfect everytime...except. The only problem I have is on
my passenger door when I unlock the door and open and close it and then try
to reopen it.....
I will use a ficticious story to help illustrate....
Lets say I am taking Jennifer Anniston out (my wife does not read the DML so
I can write this :-) and she gets out of the car...She then realizes she
forgot her purse (because of course she would be paying :-) If I try and reopen
the door a second time it hangs up on the front latch and will not open.
This makes no sense to me becasue I did not do anything except close the door
and reopen it. So I am guessing something internally is happening after its
reclosed...
If I hit the "lock" button and then "unlock" it will work again but then get
stuck when I reopen.....any ideas? I am guessing I need an adjustment inside
doors for the front latch rod or mechanism.

Not just with the DeLorean, but with other cars that I've owned, have I had this
problem too. Even with my D 2 months ago, detergents only made the problem worse
(although I must say that the engine had quite a bit more power to it after pouring in
some denatured alcohol). Case in point. I had a 97 Hyundai Accent a few years ago,
that I purchased brand new. After about 18 months or so, I tried pouring in some STP
fuel injector cleaner to try and prevent anything from happening. 2 days later, the car
had no power. It took 3 months or so or regular driving to get the accelleration
normal again. Another great one was with a 95 Dakota pickup truck I had. I poured in
some Chemtool, and about a month or so later, the fuel pump seized up.
And just earlier this year when I tried running thru chemical cleaners when my
DeLorean failed smog, it made the engine much worse. Eventually, I did pass smog,
after a new set of fuel injectors, and a good blowing out of the lines. Ever since, no
problems at all, and quite a noticeable difference in power from the motor. Looking
back on it, it was about aroumd the time that I poured a bottle of cleaner in back in
December, that I began to have problems.
As it turned out, my fuel injectors were severly clogged. And according to my
mechanic, #6 was dribbling out. This on injectors that were 3 years old, and had
around 26K miles or so on them. My mechanic asked me if I was running cheap gas. I
said no, but I had used the cleaners. And in his words, as long as I run premium
gasoline (read: name brand, NOT high octane) with proper detergents in them, I
shouldn't need to use any additives thru the normal life of any car. And considering
the trouble that I've had in the past with them, I'm not going to use them any more.
Now buying them in the first place, I wasn't trying to substitute them for any types of
repairs. I had only good intentions of keeping my car running properly. But then
again, even the best of intentions don't always turn out the way we want..

White smoke generally means coolant is getting into the combustion
chambers. There are several things you can do. Pull the spark plugs
and look for signs of water. Put a pressure tester on and see if any
of the cylinders get water in. There is a combustion gas tester you
can use on the coolant to see if you are leaking into the coolant.
This usually happens if the motor gets overheated. You could be lucky
and only blew one head gasket, not both but the safest way to go is to
replace both. If the motor really cooked you might have to pull the
liners and replace the seals too. Look at the oil, see if it is milky
or the level is too high. Not good to run the motor like this, you
could do further damage.

Jordan, I take a different approach on the injectors since I work with fuel
distributors and fuel systems all the time for Deloreans and I will say
other exotic cars. I use a chemical called Berrymans B12 that you can buy in
almost any auto store or at Wal-Mart. Sometimes it's best to let a sleeping
dog lie and by using a chemical that Dissolves the varnish a little faster
doesn't hurt. But, If the spray pattern from the nozzle of the injector has
over time affixed it's way of spraying and it's not the 360 degree or close,
then yes chemical could make it worse. Only because the varnish or something
over time has changed the nozzle spray pattern and the cleaner may make it
show it's real face. The thing that can't be done is fix the spray pattern
of the spray nozzle.. We can only clean the injector filter screen inside
and open up passages that may have been stopped up, but the pattern can't be
changes. Then it's time for new injectors and I can tell you I haven't
talked to anyone that has replaced 20 year old injectors or had them cleaned
that didn't see a big difference. Some people in the Porsche groups even go
as far as having them balanced and replace injectors with lesser pressure
for more fuel.
Just a FYI

There is a British car show on Saturday, July 26 at Downs Park in
Pasadena Maryland (Just north of Annapolis). Im planning to bring my car
along. And as far as I know, this will be the first appearance of a
DeLorean at this show. It will be right on the water, so it should make
for an enjoyable day. Hope to see you there! -Jeremy Delaney

I was so concerned with my oil pressure last post I really just
mentioned the show in passing.
It was a GREAT time. Marv did an outstanding job as our fearless
leader!
We had a nice variety of cars for a smaller get together.. Awesome
painted D from Ron and Cheryl. Single Turbo from our high-roller Al!!
and a Twin turbo from the new-comer George from Ontario! Even a
Houston upgraded engine showed up briefly... owned by a member of the
rock band Kitty.
Marv's shooting for 25 cars next year I think... and believe me he'll
show you a good time!
And Don't make the same mistake I did, you too-macho cars-guys out
there. You're girlfriends and wives will love it too. I wish I'd have
dragged my girlfriend along. Antique shoppes, tea rooms, ICE CREAM
(she loves ice cream)... luxerious hotel. I would have gone and done
all this stuff WITHOUT a car show.... In addition to a great mini-
vacation you get to see tons of DeLoreans cruis'n to these places!?
What could be better?
I was great meeting EVERYONE!!! and thanks again Marvin!!

Went to my first "local cruise-in" yesterday and won a door prize - $20 worth of
car wash coupons, weee hoooo! But more importantly I met an elderly gentleman who
is a personal friend of John DeLorean. When John worked at Pontiac & GM they
would get together and go golfing. And after coming down to Toledo, OH I guess
John grew fond of the Inverness Club (the Senior Open will be played there in a
few weeks).
I thought I'd share that with you all since this rarely happens amongst all the

As I understand it the Island Twin Turbos are still available, the
last known price that I have on my paperwork was $6,000 for the
turbo kit, you install it or get it installed. I know PJ Grady was
doing installs on these and I know Don Steiger also have some
expereince with them as well. However someone with some mechanical
skills could do the installation themselves without difficulty. The
kit comes with directions...
In addition if someone is interested, I have a good used Island Twin
Turbo for sale. It is in great shape, and is one of the later models
with the twin cats.

Subject: Re: white smoke
Lee,
I just went thru my twin turbo package and found two issues that could
produce what you experienced. First I found a large puddle of oil in
the bottom of an intercooler that was large enough to produce the amount
of smoke you described. With use it would have consumed itself.
Second, there were significant kinks in the turbo oil return lines that
probably were not allowing the oil to drain away from the turbos fast
enough. This restriction places excess pressure on the shaft seal and
will cause the turbo seal to "leak". If this is the problem than
rebuilding the turbos will not correct the problem. Make sure the drain
tube is clear and able to flow back to the pan freely, without producing
any backpressure inside the turbo.

Simple. Disconnect the Z bar that leads to the front lock and disable it.
This bar is far too flexible and leads to the inadvertent stuck locks. I got
stuck in the car once and that was enough.
