Chuck, et al:
My next door neighbor owns his own auto repair facility and is an electric
car nut. He currently has three electric cars - one "factory built", one
home built racer and one converted RX 7. Everytime he sees my DeLorean he
drools and says what a neat electirc car it would make. I wouldn't be at
all surprised if someday he does convert a D to electricity.
What a gas (pun intended), instead of a flux capacitor, he'd have an
extension cord trailing behind the car!!!

PS A couple of electric cars here in Colorado use the Optima Yellow Top
"deep cycle" batteries. Us "normal" folks use the Red Top.

Aesthetically it sounds like a good idea to me. The DeLorean certainly
would make a striking electrical vehical. This would be a very major
conversion, though, probably taking much more time and money than just
dropping in a new engine and transmission. Remember that the
DeLorean is already an electrical-hungry car, with lots of electronic
accessories.
Before you go weighing down a DeLorean engine compartment with
lead-acid batteries or installing hydrogen tanks and fuel cells I suggest
you do a little research on the safety of this conversion. Batteries are
very heavy and hydrogen tanks can explode. Removing the engine &
tranny from a DeLorean might not reduce as much weight you expect,
and the engine compartment might not be as well-protected as you need
it to be.

are the McDonalds DMC w/ Doc Brown haning out of the window. I already

flint left to make sparks.

So far I have not found any "standard" shock that will work in the D
without modifications. This is all according to information I have
received from others. I have not tried it myself.
I spoke to Bilstein, and they would be willing to make some for us, but
have not yet given me details on cost, spects, and so on..

Power Steering??
I don't think there were any Power Steering DMC-12's, were there?
Squirt some WD-40 in the rubber grommet on the firewall where the
steering column goes through. If that does not fix it, you may need a
new rack.

It's easy to diagnose DeLorean power steering problems.
If you have power steering, you have a problem! DeLoreans
were not delivered with power steering.
What I think you have given your description is a hardened
bushing at the "firewall". There is a rubber bushing that the
steering column passes through that ages and bcomes noisey.
To test this theory, spray a little WD-40 or other spray lubricant
into the seam between the steering column and the bushing.
Work the steering wheel back and forth and see if the noise
changes. If it does, you just need to replace the bushing.
If it doesn't, you may have some steering rack problems.
Check the condition of the rack boots for tears or cracks.
If they are leaking, you may have a dry rack. The rack can be
refilled with lube, but if it has been dry for a long time, there
may be some internal damage. Try refilling first, then
start shopping for a rebuilt rack.

As we talked about in the past. The u-joints in the
steering column often get frozen. Maybe you can loosen them
up without replacing them. I have been putting a spray
pentrating oil on mine for a few months and my problem,
which was much like yours has been fixed. There are two of
these U-joints on the steering column. You can get to them

My drivers side door will not open. The front latch is
stuck. I have taken the inside panels off the door trying
to fix the problem. It was suggested to me that the locking
rods might be out of adjustment and one was unlocking but
not the other. Well I have gotten to the rods and made sure
that the rod is pushed to the unlock position. But, the
door will still not open. The rear latch lets loose but not
the front.
Does any body have a suggestion what I can do next. (If it
makes any difference, I have a very early car and it does

The speakers that I have purchased for the dash are two ways and the
tweeter
is set off of the mounting face by quite a bit. Unfortunately, the
mounting
studs are a bit too short and I am making some special nuts with an offset
mounting face to mount the speakers without modifying the speaker itself.
I
have tried to "screw" one of the nuts over two of my taps (M4x.7 and
M4x.75)
to check the pitch before I tap the new "nuts." Neither one of the taps
would screw into the nuts. I have also tried to measure the studs (size
and
pitch) and was unsuccsessful due to the cramped space.
My question is: does anyone know what tap and pitch the studs require?

There is one large problem most are disregarding in the windows =
regulator replacement and other problems in recommending that we not try =
it ourselves but take it to a service person who knows HOW. This is =
fine for you owners in heavily loaded DeLorean areas near the dealers, =
but you forget there are some of us out in the boonies where it is NOT =
practical to drive several thousand miles, nor have their vans come and =
get our car for a relatively small repair job! I am pretty mechanically =
inclined, but getting along in years and I do not relish the various =
problems involved. I have studied carefully all of the pros and cons =
and it does not seem feasible at all for me to try to do the repairs. I =
have had the drivers window stuck solidly half way down and taped over =
with a clear plastic for about a year now!!! =20
Recenty I read a couple horror stories about taking the new motor =
housing apart and other things I had not counted on to squeeze it in. =
Then no one says this out loud hardly, but I caught a little thread (if =
I am not mistaken) that these new regulators which supposedly correct =
all the old problems and are more or less "forever" for us, actually =
were NOT made for the DeLorean. A couple sources say that they do not =
actually fit but "will work okay with a little adapting". Does anyone =
know what this means. A friend who owned an auto repair shop before he =
retired said that the pictures I have shown him are familiar and are in =
some of our American or maybe foreign
cars. If this is true, does anyone know what they actually are made =
for?
My window wont budge up or down, but my thought right now is to see if I =
can find what is holding it and hopefully raise the window to the top of =
its travel...then figure out a wood block to wedge below it so it wont =
come down!! I will just pretend that I have a Gull Wing Mercedes =
which had NO movable windows. Our cars are even better, in that we have =
air conditioning and blowers, where the Mercedes did not have =
either....WOW. I used to ride in a friends and it was an oven in the =
summer. =20
In the meantime, if anyone in the Pacific Northwest would like a little =
vacation in my town (Walla Walla, WA) I sure would like to help him put =
a new regulator in my car!!

To the best of my knowledge there are no accurate numbers of auto trans
vs.
5 speed, what I can tell you is that of the 8,500 cars built about one
quarter to one third of the cars were automatics. This was in sharp
contrast to the predicted 50/50 split that the company expected.

The original window motor/regulators are in the same category as the
Ducillier alternator; there sh_ _ _ ! Excuse my almost bad language but
every time I pull one of these original regulators out I cant wait to

it in the garbage. Forget limit switches or any other device to improve
this piece of junk item. If you have laid the money out to purchase and
own
this fabulous machine spend a few more dollars and get the heavy duty
replacements. Although difficult to install if you have never done it
before the replacements will last indefinitely with no electrical
modifications required.

By design, tires are manufactured with the intention of being distributed
within a certain period of time, sold and used within a certain time and

have completed their normal treadlife within a certain time.
Considering Goodyear places a four year age limitation on weather type
cracking, it would be safe to say that after the tires reach 4-5 years in
age,
visual inspection of the tires should be performed on a more frequent
basis.
Again, we would suggest inspection of these tires by an authorized
Goodyear
retailer before considering using these tires in service.

My D has been sitting in the garage for a few months now. It was the
victim of a garage mechanic in it's previous life. After replacing the
engine compartment wiring harness, replumbing the brakes, clutchline,
coolant lines, and fuel lines it starts right up and sounds really good
at idle. The problem is when I try to give it gas, it just chokes out
and dies. It isn't getting too much gas as there is no residual fuel
smell. The accumulator, frequency valve, control pressure regulator and
fuel pump are all relatively new and seem to be functioning properly.
The only thing left I can think of is the fuel distributor (which I
really hope isn't the problem). Are there and test I can perform on the
distributor to either confirm or eliminate it as my problem? Any other

I had new shocks installed in the rear when I replaced both rear calipers.
My shop used "equivalent" replacements that seam to work fine. I haven't
bothered to look to see what brand was used or where they came from but
they seams to be no big deal.
That's why I asked, I was a bit surprised that shocks were a big problem.

Followup: I now got my door open. I had to use a pry bar
from the inside of the car, so that I would not damage the
outside. When I got it open, I found the head of the door
jam bolt missing. It is the pin, with a head on it, that
you can loosen and move around until it strikes the door
latch correctly. I am surprised that the head is missing.
I may find it lost into the door but I have not looked yet.

shocks available. Only what is left over from 1982.

It is off a mid 80's Corvette. Quite a number of us have that light on
our
cars. I have it on my current D and had it on my previous D for a number
of years. It honestly looks like it was factory installed. Looks great
and installation is simple.

I have been to Walla Walla WA several times, some years ago, so I have a
feel for your point of view.
I would not be intimidated by the "stories" about how hard it is to
replace
the regulators.
I might like to take a drive your way one of these days, but I have not
tackled a window problem my self, so I am in no position to offer advice
past possibly this. We have a fully detailed DMC garage and several owners
who might be willing to take a Sunday and attack your frozen windows if
your D was here (Berkeley CA) 1326 miles from down town Walla Walla Wa. In
the event you wanted to do something along these lines you would have to
get all the parts in advance. With out tearing your out first to see why
it
is stuck? there is no way to know what adjustment are required, what parts
need replacement.
I would think that the PNDMC which is much closer would have guys who
could
help? Have you contacted Gary Hull and asked?

Are you sure the frequency valve is working, it should be buzzing when the
engine is running. A non operating frequency valve will cause the problem
you describe. If it is working your problem will probably be corrected
with
a CO mixture adjustment.
BTW it is unlikely that the fuel distributor is causing this problem. A
defective fuel distributors will prevent the engine from starting or
running.

The item your talking about is called a Door Lock Striker part # 110068
available from DeLorean part suppliers. As a suggestion, if your door ever
jams again do not force it open, this could cause serious damage to the
latching system and be very costly to repair. Jammed doors can always be
opened by manipulation of certain internal parts of the latch and lock
system.

Thanks for all of your comments, here are the facts. I have personally
removed and replaced at least one hundred regulators over the last 14
years
therefore my comments are through "hands on" experience. The replacement
heavy duty window regulators are custom manufactured for the DeLorean

They are far superior to the originals, i.e.: larger motor, larger
stronger
gear assembly and an all steel tube for the drive cable. It is this tube
that causes the difficulty in installation. The factory unit is flimsy
with
a plastic coupling that flexes and is easier to manipulate inside the door
than the after market unit. Additionally the after market unit uses a
different mounting bracket. To make matters worse, depending on who you
order the motors from, there are either limited instructions or non at
all.
When you consider the exclusiveness of the DeLorean door and a modified
part to go into that door with little or no directions its no wonder why
this item causes so much frustration.
To assist you with your window I suggest you remove the upper door panel
and see if you can see the bottom of the window where the cable attaches.
If so you should be able to, with the aid of a large screw driver or pry
bar, be able to coax the window up to the closed position, if you need
more

Classic Car will have a D on it. Whitch is all I know. Also on a side
note it could be possible to get then do a show from one of the meets if
enough people go to the feture car section of the MCC page and requst
it.

After reading thearticle in the third issue of the 'zine' about the
DeLoreans that were sitting out in the rain, I began to wonder how many
DeLoreans had water in their fuel tanks after the rain. This past
weekend I
looked at a June '81build DeLorean and I noticed that water could get
into
the fuel tank if it rained because there was no drain for the water. The
owner also told me he had a problem with rain getting in the fuel tank.
Is
this problem common to all DeLoreans, or just the earlier models. The
DeLorean I looked at did have a hood flap. By the way, my new web site is

hi, D-lovers.
I'm having a bit of a problem. I'm searching an alternative or cross
reference for; Clutch master cylinder. I have found in parts
crossref.DMC12 a Girling; 74660518 . I can't find it back anywhere.
Is there anybody out there who knows in what car I can find the similar
cylinder or alternative, even numbers of other references.
Was the cylinder ever used in other European cars?
Please notify measurements of plunger seal in Clutch master cylinder.
Cross references on all parts of the DMC12 are very welcome, also updates.

Well, today it happened, after 30-odd thousand miles, trips from Phoenix
to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis, Nashville, Cincinnati,
Houston, etc - today my car was in an accident.
I was driving through the bank parking lot and a little Mazda pickup
backed into the passenger side of the car. At a minimum it needs a new
passenger fender, and probably the door, too. "Quickie" digital pictures

If you look carefully at the hood design and the trunk seals you will see
that ordinary rain is channeled from the rear of the Hood to the front of
the car. If the fuel filler assembly and hoses are tight as they should be
and the filler cap is tight no water can enter the fuel tank unless the
cap
is loose or removed. I drove my D all last year threw the worst and
wettest
winter in years and never had a drop of water in my gas. I also had no
door
leaks either. The gas flap versions may tend to accumulate or expose the
tank nozzle when fueling but I doubt that the design in and of it's-self
leads to ongoing water contamination.

Though I have never owned a D with the gas flap, I've owned a late 81 and
an 83. Both have been caught in heavy rains and both have been washed in
a
high pressure self-service car wash. I have never experienced any
problems
with water leaking into the gas tank.
I suspect that to do so, the gas filler cap would have to be loose.
