This past weekend I was asked a question I have yet to have seen posted-
and
could not find any information in past posts. Though it may not seem that
important (especially to those who have mechanical problems), I admit it
had
me wondering. The question was as follows:
Since the DeLorean has such a poor fresh airflow, due to it's small
windows,
has there ever been any modifications to the rear window that has helped
in
providing a better circulation? I.E. The Honda Civic Del-Sol has a rear
window that goes down; Many pickup trucks have the option to open a
sliding
rear window.
Why would you want to make such a change.... Well that's another post in
itself!

You haven't given us much info, but my instinct says this is a simple
problem related to the fuel tank. Perhaps you were just low on fuel and /
or your fuel tank baffel / inlet assembly is loose inside the tank. A
loose
fuel inlet wandering around in the tank can cause a DeLorean to stall at
random. You might also have a small leak in your inlet hose; that can
have a simlar but less random effect.
The questions might provide clues:
Just before the engine died, did it sputter at all? Did it stumble or
stall out
while braking or turning corners? Does your fuel gauge read
accurately? If you fill the tank all the way, does the car run just fine?

Subject: DML: posting, help wanted engine operation
1981 runs like there is a major vacuum leak with NO throttle
control. Runs rough at idle and by moving sensor plate engine
RPM picks up and engine smooths out. Throughout, there is a bad
odor, most of which is unburned fuel.
There is adequate spark, ignition wires and timing has been check
by three different knowledgeable people at least 6 times and
there is no discernable vacuum leak checking with propane.
There is seemingly plenty of vacuum at the cold start
valve/auxiliary air pipe join, yet there is a definite loss of
vacuum at the manifold. The loss is huge judging by the fact
that we can block off the air inlet at the sensor plate
completely and the engine will still continue to run!
This all started out as just a simple "tune-up" with new rotor,
cap, plugs and wires. The cap, rotor and wires appeared to be
original and the plugs had been miscapped at perhaps .010 inches.
The mixture control unit with the inter inlet manifold were
removed as a unit allowing us to gain access to the distributor.
The old cap and rotor match up well to the new.
Before anything was done, the engine ran and was driveable with
positive throttle control. There was some minor idle seeking +/-
a few hundred RPM and fairly smooth running and acceleration.
Under load and at higher speeds, it would have a pronounced miss-
kind of what you would expect on a 71,000 mile engine with poor
plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
Remember there is no throttle control!
By the way, my son had just purchased the car a few weeks
earlier.

It should be no problem with the extra weight in the doors. IF it does
not "spring" all the way up just do the regular adjustment on the
torsion bar a notch.
I know of several who have this installed. Like Darryl says, it is fun
to head for your car in the super market parking lot, hit the button,

To make it even more spectacular, you might install the remote start

Check the rubber gasket, part #102772, between the throttle valve ass'y
and
the mix unit's lower housing. This gasket is actually two rubber coated
plates sandwiched together by a thick rubber center section. The center
rubber section can tear if your not careful when removing the manifolding,
throttle linkage and such while removeing the fuel mix unit. If it tears
it
leaves a huge vacuum leak and it becomes very difficult to control the
throttle. I use carb cleaner to look for vacuum leaks. I think it's a bit
safer than propane. This may not be your problem but your discription
certainly sounds like it is. You should be able to get the part through a
Volvo dealer but he'll most likely have to order it. The DeLorean shops
might be a better choice.
You should also check the auxilary air pipe
that goes from the idle control motor into the lower housing of the mix
unit. It's a bugger to get back right as it's hard to see. Without it
inserted into the mix unit, you have a hole bigger than your thumb sucking
air in.

It seems some of the braided SS brake line kits have gotten to some of
the
owners on this list and it has generated new interest from some of their
buddies after seeing them. Since they were "made to order" the last time,
and
I have no extra sets left over, we're going to do it one more time, just
like
befor.
The kits we're talking about are braided stainless steel brake lines
which
replace the stock rubber brake hoses on the Delorean. These kits were
developed by myself and a friend who is the senior engineer for a company
in
the OEM automotive hose business in Europe. They are a top quality
product and
are made specifically as an exact replacement for the stock lines on the
car.
They are a 4 line kit and meet USA-DOT and European-TUV standards and are
approved for highway use.
Cost is $120 per set. Est'd delivery is 3 to 4 weeks.
Like befor, if you're interested in a set, e-mail me and let me know.
The
way we work it is, You send me a check to hold your kit. I'll place your
check
in my file drawer until I receive the kits. When I ship your kit to you,
I'll
deposit your check. If, for some reason, the kits don't make it, I'll
return
your check.

Subject: DML: [long] new/old dml'r
Now that I'm finally online and officially a DMCNews subscriber, I wanted
to
take this opportunity to introduce myself to the list readers. Many of
you
know me and my mail-order DeLorean parts business, Specialty Automotive,
which has been selling new and used parts for nearly 13 years. In that
time
I've owned 6 DeLoreans, including the "81 mile found-in-a-bedroom" car now
in Switzerland, and my well-known supercharged Chevy powered daily
driver.
I also dismantled 6 more cars, adding to my stock of over 10,000 parts.
But
in February '96 my life took a nasty turn, and my business was an
unfortunate casualty. And I'm sure a lot of people wondered just what had
happened.
After 25 years my marriage fell apart, due to long standing difficulties,
and I moved out. I had been holding off until my 2 kids got out of
school,
but didn't quite make it. Anyway, the divorce was legal hell, with her
stealing some $14,000 worth of left fenders and other parts, and as many
of
you apparently know also doing her best to ruin me. I ended up getting
most
of the parts back (they had been awarded to me, but she took them anyway),
and eventually got my house, shop, parts, both DeLoreans, both kids, and
the
dog back. $40,000 in legal fees later I was finally free.
During all this I was so fed up I vowed to never get involved with anyone
again, and to make sure was not even dating. But an interesting thing
happened. I went to my 30th high school class reunion, and got talking
to a
woman there who I've known since we were 7 (who I had seen once in 30
years)
about our respective divorces and lives. Next thing I knew we were
dating,
and 36 days later were engaged! We got married 7/25/98, exactly a year
after the reunion, sold my house, and bought a place in a small town on 5
acres. There were 7 DeLoreans at the wedding and one on top of the cake.
And I've never been happier. The business, which was nearly in ruins, is
starting to pick up, and now that I'm advertising and on the net, a lot of
old customers are coming back. Its been a long haul, but things are
definitely looking up.
As for my car, I put a supercharged Chev 4.3 V-6 in a neglected,
engine-less
17,000 mile car, and have been driving it for 3 years now. I made my own
adapter, motor mounts, and headers, and everything is chromed and polished
including all 4 sides of the engine compartment. It handles and rides
very
well, and never overheats - its the coolest running DeLorean I have
owned.
It is very fast and super reliable. There will be a full article about it
in an upcoming DMCNews-zine. Luckily I got to keep this car in trade for
other property, but my other project car became an issue in settlement.
An
earlier DeLorean had been sold in '95 to finance my daughter's college
education. In fairness to my son, who was close to graduation, I proposed
to the judge that I be given custody of the car, complete its restoration,
and sell it for his college. The judge agreed, but due to my subsequent
remarriage and moving, its completion has lagged. So now it is being
offerred for sale as is. If anyone is interested in a 12,000 mile gray
interior A/T with a polished and chromed turbocharged motor, see my ad
under classifieds or e-mail me direct.
As a new subscriber to DMCNews I hope to be able to provide some insight
from my years of owning, driving, modifying, and selling parts for these
unique cars. I can also provide how-to info on remote control opening
doors, the correct way to fix fan fail relay problems for practically
nothing, and many other tips. Feel free to contact me by e-mail directly,
or call evenings or weekends. Take care and happy motoring.

make the original condition cars more valuable when prices finally rise

Except that you can't make stainless steel panels out of fiberglass. I'd
like to meet the guy that could make the panels for the limo pictured in
the

Speaking of fiberglass... I have been considering learning how to
fiberglass
so I can construct some custom parts for my DeLorean. I wanted to make a
louver replacement that would make the rear end look more like a
Lamborghini
or Farrari, with the rear sides dipping down into a flat vented engine
cover, and possibly adding a spoiler. I was also looking into a rear
facia
cover that would replace the stock light fixtures/license plate holder
with
something more appealing (like circular lights a-la Corvette/Diablo).
Can anyone offer any advice/assistance on the matter? So far I've built
custom tail light fixtures out of wood, and tinted plastic. Looks nice,
much cooler than the 80's waffle lights... I can post pictures if anyone
is interested in how it looks...
I really want to design and build updates that are "bolt-on", and can be
added and removed exactly like their stock equivalents... The car is just
too cool to be "cursed" with a few things that make it look dated.

Good grief, you haven't given us much to go on! Yes, a car that has not
been run for a long time might have fuel problems. Those problems could
even be severe. You might start by removing the cover from the air
intake on the engine and looking / sniffing for gasoline. If there is
absolutely no gas there then you might indeed have a fuel pump problem.
> I've searched the back issues for information on fuel

This is surprising. Search again! There should be a LOT of information
about all sorts of fuel problems in the back issues, including how to
access the pump.
> My question is, can anyone tell us the procedure for accessing
> the fuel pump and (if possible) fixing it?
Open the luggage compartment. Remove the spare tire. Now remove
the access panel below the spare tire. You are looking at the top of the
fuel tank, and the pump is that big thing with wires and hoses going to
it.
Before you yank the pump out, try cranking the engine very briefly, just
1-2 seconds. You should hear the fuel pump whirring. If you don't hear
it then the pump isn't getting power. Check electrical connections,
starting with the inertia switch.
Maybe the car is just low on gas. DeLorean fuel guages are notorious
for reading "FULL" when they are actually empty.

Subject: DML: Firestar 500
Hi,
I was just curious as to what ever happened to the Firestar 500,
the super-DeLorean that could supposedly go over 200 m/h. I would love
for that to become reality except it would probly make DMC-12 prices
skyrocket. Thanks so much for this great mailing list.

Nothing. JZD is getting old, is not in excellent health, rather poor
financially these days, and unfortunately not very credible in the auto
world any more. There were a few attempts to restart DMC and
unfortunately none of them were successful because JZD had essentially no
credibility after the drug trial and close of DMC, even though he was
acquitted and also won all his civil cases. What with the recession being
over and jobs being at less of a premium neither the USA nor Canada (who
had probably had enough with Bricklin) were terribly interested in another
DeLorean boondoggle and the UK was of course out of the question.
I don't think that the Firestar ever proceeded beyond the rumor stage,
even though the rumors persist to this day.
My guess is that the Firestar would have materialized as a DMC-12 option
package in about 1986 and gradually transformed into the supercar it was
supposed to be. For a similar story, see the Toyota Celica/Supra. At
this point the Firestar would (in my estimation) be roughly like a McLaren
crossed with an NSX and would cost between $100,000 and $200,000.
Hey, while we're on the subject, does anyone know what issues of Car &
Driver and/or Road & Track the original DeLorean reviews appeared in? It
might be fun to look those up.

It could be the inertia switch has gotten tripped. Check under the dash
on
the driver's side next to the clutch pedal for a little black plastic box
with a plunger mechanism.
If it is showing red, it is tripped, and has disconnected the fuel pump
(used
in the event of a sudden stop as in a crash). Its a simple check and
easy to
fix.

Oh lord, not this again.
It was a pipe dream from 1986 that never got further than some stylist's
sketchpad. A sketch was published in Motor Trend in Jan. 1986, p. 17
The only thing you'll get that's close to it is a Ferrari F-40. They used
some of the styling details from the Firestar500 on it, notably the
exhaust location and the huge rear wing. Check out US patent D306274
Let us never speak of this forevermore.

How
much does it cost? How good does it match a new panel? How big of an

can be filled in?

Hey List,
I just wanted to say that I just got the Remote door release kit in
today
and I am going to install it Saturday. I do have one question, in order
to
run the wires through the door, I want to run the wires where they
already are
going through. I was wondering if anyone on the list could tell me how to
take the interior ceiling apart so I can run the wires through. I plan on
putting the module and relays in the locking box behind the driver's seat.
This kit has 4 channels so I am going to be able to hook this right up to
my
door locks so it will lock and unlock my doors too. I think this is the
easiest kit around for anyone. All you need to get are longer wires to
splice
with the wires they already gave you and a couple Male-Female connectors
to
make the job nice and clean.

Subject: DML: Antennea relay power
My power antennea isn't working properly. I'd like to confirm that the
red wire with the inline fuse going to the clear plastic relay in the
compartment *similar* to the relay compartment that is behind the
*drivers* seat is supposed to have +12V on it. I'd also like to confirm
that this is the same red wire that is plugged into the module (thermal
breaker I beleive) that is providing power for and located next to the
door lock module in the realy compartment on the other side of the car.
As it stands now, I read very little or no voltage on the red wire on
the drivers side, but read +12V on the passanger's side. The other
wire going to the relay is switched between ground and N/C when the
radio is turned on and off. The power antennae functions when I apply
a 12V power source to it (without the clear relay). I beleive that the
red wire is broken between the left and right sides of the car. I'd
appreciate info pertaining to accessing the wire loom that follows this
path and any similar situations anyone on the list may have experienced.
I have also noticed that the power antennae circuit is absent from the
wiring diagrams that I have, and I plan to draw up the circuit and post
it to a web page after I get mine working properly. (It's a rather
simple circuit, but handy to have at any rate)
