If I remember right, Ben Byrd called himself a DeLorean genius. He had
worked for DMC in some capacity and offered parts and service for a few
years in the mid-eighties but his reputation wasn't the best. After he
sold
his inventory and quit servicing DeLoreans he put a single news letter
together with several articles related to the care and feeding of the
DeLorean. This he mailed to as many owners as he had names for offering it
as a periodical for the subscription fee of $50 per year. I, along with
several friends, sent him the money and he promply disappeared. His
stainless cover for the lower part of the cars rear end, which covered the
exposed frame and muffler area, didn't work and caused a heat build-up in
the engine compartment. I sent him my distributor to be re-curved and all
he
did was install a small piece of rubber hose to act as a bumper and limit
the amount of mechanical advance instead of actualy changing the springs
and
recurving the whole advance sequence. Needless to say, my memories of
Scientific Automotive aren't the best but I know nothing about Terry
Spangler and it wouldn't be fair to pass judgment on him because of my
experiances with Ben Byrd.

Here's a link to a site with a picture that is identical to the
DeLorean's
transmission.  This particular transmission is a four-speed but looks
just
like the five speed from the outside.

Interestingly enough, this transmission is being mated to a Rover V8 in a
Lamborghini kit.  The person building states that the transaxle is
extremely over built.  Hmmm... Not from my experince!   :)

Subject:        DML: Transmission Layout?

Does anyone have a picture of a DeLorean 5-speed transmission up on the
web somewhere?  I am looking for an idea of how the transmission is
shaped.  I want to know where the input shaft is in relation to the
output.  I'm assuming it's a transaxle, where the output is at a 90 degree
angle to the input... right? :}  Any pointers would be appreciated. :)

The difference between the DeLorean engine and the 750hp Renault engine is
as great as the difference between the Ford 302 engine in a Mustang and
Michial Andretti's Cosworth Ford in the Cart car he drives. I'm not sure

Reault used the basic street V-6 as a building block for it's Formula One
engines or visa versa.

Luke,

Check the vacuum hoses that go from the control pressure regulator, the
solinioid valve by the distributor, and the vaccum line coming out of the
rear of the intake manifold, near the distruibutor. These are all routed
under the intake manifold to the thermal control valve and have a direct
influence on the engines behavior when cold. A vaccum leak somewhere in
this
system would produce the symptoms you've discribed.

Subject: DML: Ditzler Paint

Well I've been to three different paint stores and none can relate to
the Ditzler paint number or cross it to PPG Industries. Has anyone been
succesful in getting a PPG formula or another brand of paint. I'm
striking out here. I've looked at the cross reference list from the
local club which shows a GM medium gray paint number but looking at the
chip color in my local NAPA shop shows its a dark gray color.

Subject: DML: DELOREAN video

For Christmas my father gave me the video "DELOREAN, The Car and The
Factory" purchased from the DeLorean Owners Association and
I watched it the next morning. In the first moment of the film they show
the car driving around with the windows open and thats about it for the
moving pictures. the rest is a dull slide show... with a room full of
people discussing the factory. I was hoping that by writing this I would
be able to find one or more of the producers of the film just to tell
them my opinion of the film. If at all possible could you come out with
another volume or something with more on the car (with more motion
pictures) I thought I would never get bored with the Delorean but this
makes an exception.
If there are anymore videos on the delorean would you please reply to my
e-mail and give me the names of them?

I have a pair of sheepskins in my D that have seen over 12 years of
service
(that includes over 70,000 miles).  In fact they were in my first D and I
moved them over to my present D.  They wear very well (still quite
serviceable, but should be replaced within a year or so ) and are much
more
comfortable than the original leather (also cooler in the summer and
warmer
in the winter).  They fit perfectly.  That's the good news.

I bought mine from Ed B at DeLorean One and they were a whole lot more
than
$99 and that was 12 years ago and that's the bad news.

Hey everyone, there is another DMC Dealership Sign being auctioned off =
on the internet at www.ebay.com (Search under Delorean). So far no bids =
on it, and it ends on New Years Eve at 9am Pacific Time.  I hope someone =
gets as lucky as I did with the last one that was auctioned off.  My =
sign looks great hanging in my garage.  What a piece of nostalgia.

Also, just a note of thanks to all of you.  Even though I haven't asked =
many questions, all of the answers to everybody else's questions are =
great and have helped me out alot.  I hope everyone has a great New Year =
and may it be ever prosperous for all of you.

Thanks for all the specs regarding the motor swap.  By the way if you
find out where to get a DMC die cast model please let me know.  I have
been looking for one for over five years as well as a few other people I
know.  I actually spoke to die cast and they said they don't have one. 
They tried to sell me the 1954 Mercedes with gull wing doors.  She was
well prepared for the answer so I'm not the first person to ask for it. 
But if you find one let me know.  Thanks again.

I've had a similar problem with no solution.  In my case, just when the
engine is really cold in the morning from fall to spring.  It's fine in
the
summer.  Also, it affects my top end, when I push the gas pedal down to
the
floor, the car will accelerate to around 4,000 RPM's then just run out of
steam (cannot go higher RPM), but if I back my foot off the pedal a little
bit the engine will go right to 5,000+ RPM's, but not full power (because
the pedal is backed off).  The only suggestion has been to replace the
fuel
filter which didn't work.  I'm beginning to think that my fuel pump cannot
supply enough pressure where the engine needs to run rich.

Do you have an automatic?  Your computer may be shot.  Hook up a test
light
to your computer access panel and see if your computer is telling your car
to be in 3rd gear.  Check the back issues for how to test the computer, or
email me directly.

Although you can always check this (it doesn't cost anything), I think
it's unlikely to be the problem.  Although a shot computer can injure your
acceleration like this, it's usually because the transmission is not in
the right gear or slips.  In this case, the engine itself is unable to
accelerate.

I would be looking for problems in the fuel injection system.  Fuel pump
would be a reasonable choice, so would the oxygen sensor (maybe) or
something else in the lambda setup, the fuel pickup in the tank, and even
the throttle linkage.  Since it happens only when cold, the fuel
enrichment circuit would also be a culprit.  I would check the enrichment
circuit and the pickup first.

Ok
for those of you interested in painting the facias here is all the numbers

Paint
Silver DAU33584

Hardener
DXR 80

Flexibilizer
DX 814

Reducer
DT 860

Mix the paint 1:1 with the reducer
now mix in to the above mix 10-20%  flexibilizer and 5% hardener
this will give you a dryer mix and will not be as glossy.  Spray on very
thin
almost a dust coat ( a wide tip airbrush actually does better)
when done the finish will look kinda dull but smoothe
use 3m polishing compound 1500 grit or higher to buff back top original
finish

For those of you that saw my car at the show my rear facia was touched up
in
11 places
and it blended in real well. 

Thats my tip on painting

Apparently the are 2 seperate fonts available that I have found out about.
The first font is called "De Lorean" It is a true type font with full
characters. This font looks exactly like the De Lorean on the rear bumper
and the DMC logo on the front. I believe the cost is around $20 plus
shipping & handling. Or you can avoid S&H if you have them e-mail the file
directly to you. You can obtain it from:

The second font that has been mentioned is called "Double Back". This font
is the one from the BTTF movie logos(arced with an arrow at the end). It's

Since my trans happens to be sitting all put back together on my
workbench, waiting to be reinstalled,  I'd be glad to take and send you
some digital pix. As soon as I get a chance to get down there and take
some, I'll send to you directly. I also have a great set of pictures
(paper) of the transmission completely disasembled, and the steps
involved in putting it back together. (Maybe a 'Zine article). I'd have
to get them scanned so this will take a little more effort.

After waiting about an hour to load, you'll see a great series of
pictures of his engine/trans removal and replacement.

I also have a complete second transmission that I bought for parts. It is

Subject: DML: '81 DeLorean STILL for sale.

Yes, I still have #4761, and it's still for sale.  I've been at school and
really haven't had the time to keep up the car, and some new problems
wiggled out of storage- the left rear tire won't hold air now and I think
the RF brake caliper is stuck.  This is in addidtion to the bad exhaust
manifold gasket that I've been meaning to repair since summer.  There are
some cosmetic issues in the interior (center headliner, driver's seat, and
binnacle), but outside of that, the car's in very good condition.  The
stainless is perfect.  No dents, scratches, etc.  very presentable car if
someone wants to sort through it.  College kids don't have time for
collector cars- I'm selling all of them ('77 AMC Pacer as well).  I'm
ASKING
$14,000, but I'm taking offers.  I did pay $13,000 for the car three years
ago and put about two grand in it (new A/C system and other misc. things).
It only has 43k miles on it, grey interior, auto trans.  I have a bunch of
memorabilia for the car, too, and every reciept from every repair it's
ever
had, plus a photocopy of the original window sticker.  I will take less
than
asking price.  I'm hesitant about going under $13k, but you guys know
DeLoreans, come up here, tell me what it's worth, and make me an offer. 
The
car is located in SE Wisconsin.  My phone number is 414-724-5166, and I'll
be here at home until Jan. 18, then it's back to school.

When I got my car a year ago it had a problem much like yours.  I even
drove
it to the Cincinnati show and asked for help.  No one told me the right
thing.  Finally I checked the O2 sensor.  It was bad.  Mine was completely
bad.  Yours may be operating some of the time.  I understand that they
put out
no voltage when cold and when hot, after maybe 2-5 minutes of running,
they
put our some small voltage.  The repair manual tells how to plug a dwell
meter
into the frequency control circuit.  If the dwell reading does not vary
widely
when the car is warm, more than 10 degrees, then the O2 sensor is bad.  I
hope

dashboard became cracked as well as the steering wheel.  Are these items

The 1984 Delorean was never produced.  Except for a few prototypes that
were being developed by legend turbo inc. The 1984 Delorean never went
into production...(((1983 Corvette never went into "actual" production,
only a few were built, etc. yadda yadda yadda))).
       The DeLorean with its virtues had a significant
impact on the Corvette. John DeLorean wanted to produce a sophisticated
machine to "kill" the Corvette. In my opinion, just as you are intitled to
yours, the DeLorean Twin Turbo was a threat to the Corvette. Chevy knew
that under John DeLoreans direction he created a profitable car division
(chevrolet) and he had the know how and ability to create something that
challenged what GM offered in terms of a "luxury Sports Car". It's sad to
say that except for only a few us that know this, the public will
remember 
John DeLorean with drugs etc, not the savior to GM what Lee Iacocca was
for Chrysler. John DeLorean IS the father of the Muscle Car era.
        IF the 1984 twin turbo Delorean with a 0-60 time of 5 seconds, a
twenty-five year body warranty, and a fifty thousand mile- 5 year engine
warranty had been produced, it would have killed the Corvette.  In
1984,   the Delorean would have outsold many of its competitors, including
the Corvette.(((...THIS IS WHAT THE COMPANY HAD PLANNED))).
        I purchased a 1996  Automatic Collector Edition Corvette new.
After dealing with GM and their service departments I'm thankful that I
waited a year
and a half for my DeLorean restoration. Yes I sold the Vette after  8
months of ownership. I'll never sell my DeLorean.

Thats just my opinion.

Rotary (13B) engines can last longer that 150K if:
Constant oil changes (every 2500 mi like clock work) and never drive
with an antifreeze leak (overheating is the #1 killer).  The 3rd
generation RX7 (93+) is prone to terrible engine problems because of its
cracking twin turbos and crazy drivers.  The 13B would be perfect for
the Delorean (especially an 1988 Turbo II) because it's size, weight and
power would make the Delorean fly. 
P.S. once you understand how a rotary works, you'll be amazed by its
simplicity!

Subject: DML: Cross Reference Update

For those of you keeping Cross Reference Lists please make the following
corrections:

Wheel Stud: Wheel Tite 28251 is Incorrect because it has a 1/2-20 thread
for US cars.

I have four Doorman 610-376 wheel studs due on Monday I believe are the
correct size for our cars (M12-1.50 x 49mm long)

The Grey paint number from NAPA auto stores is Incorrect as 785732. It
should be number 785372 for the GM Medium Grey Poly paint. Which in my
opinion is too dark a grey for the facias. I continue my quest to find
the Ditzler (PPG) DAU-33584 paint formula.

I am also using the NAPA 1348 small oil filter because I don't have the
45 degree adapter on my oil pressure sender unit to allow me to use the
larger diameter oil filters. I also use the NAPA 3156 fuel filter.
