Erik, I don't have that particular serial number myself, but I have to
ask . . . how did you resist the subject title:
"Car 54, Where are You?"
I agree that Lee Seiler has done something important for the DeLorean
community in producing this limited edition model.  I don't even have
mine yet, but I am still grateful to him.

Greetings, DML'ers.    When my DMC was new & the primary veh., I chose
full cov. w/Farmers (Liab., Med., Comp.,Coll.,) for a single male <30,
rather than add to the family Allstate policy because it was
cheaper-$600-$620/yr. After 5.5yrs Farmers dropped me because.....it was
a DeLorean!!   PTHTHTHTH!!    I now have Comp., Actual Cash Value, $5oo
ded. w/Allstate for $176/yr. This incl. a Pref. Driver Disc.     In
researching, I found MOST co.s won't take a DMC as a prim. veh., OR
charg an arm & leg(diff. to drive, then).       Thomas Grienpenberg in
Waretown, NJ mentioned he receives an Allstate disc. because of their
R&D invest. The head office here in Tulsa has no inkling.  Does anyone
in NJ know a contact person that can provide me w/info.?     Would you

Well I've finally gone and done it.... I've bought my first Delorean ( =
pictures at http://24.2.178.159 ).  Thanks to the Grady's for fixing the =
Speedo, Tach, and straigtening of the winshield posts!!  Of course with =
the first Delorean (as with any Delorean for that matter)  comes the =
first problem.  I hope I'm not rehashing something from way back when, I =
checked the archives but couldn't seem to find this specific problem.  =
Anyways here goes.  Though the previous owner had replaced the rack and =
pinion steering not too long ago, I find that from center there is about =
5 to 10 degrees of play in the wheel before it starts turning the =
wheels.  To be more specific, for those 5 or 10 degrees it feels like it =
is not connected to  anything and then you feel it "grab" and steer.  =
I've looked underneath for any blatant problems (ie parts replaced with =
rubber bands and loose connections) and found none.  Before I start =
thinking about investigating deeper, Does anyone out there have a clue =
as to where I should start looking??  Thanks

Subject: DML: Fuel problem
       In this issue:
        _SUBJECTS_
The other day I was filling up my gas tank, I know that DeLorean gas
tanks and the devices on fuel pumps are not good bed fellows.  So I
filled
the tank up with what I thought to be the correct amount, i had half a
tank
so to be safe I added 5 gallons of gas.  I left the car to go pay the
attendent inside, and when I return a large puddle of gas had formed
under my
car.  Looking under the car I found that there seemed to be a leak under
the
passenger side seat area.  Only a few drops were out of the car so I
questioned weather in the span of five minutes if those little drops
could
have formed such a large puddle.  I got the car home and the dripping
continued, however there haven't been any large puddles under the car.
So
I've been driving the car (since it is my only form of transportation)
and
now that I'm down to half a tank again the dripping has stopped.  My
mechanic
is going to be unavailable until Thursday, so i was wondering if there
was
anyone whould could help shed light on this little enigma.

I'm new to the list and I'm looking to buy a Delorean.  I found >
nearby where I live but have a few questions.   First of all, the frame =
has a small amount of rust on the underside in the front of the car.  =
Also on the edges of the pans on the underside is a small amount of =
rust.  The fuse box has been upgraded, but the fuse controlling the =
accessory lighting has melted.  What kind of problem could this be?  We =
weren't able to replace it and try another fuse at the time.  The A/C =
Blower motor needs to be replaced.  The fuel gauge indicator is pointing =
straight up.  The right window switch contacts need to be cleaned and =
the left window jumps when operating it.  The driver seat is in bad =
condition but the rest of the interior is very nice (garaged).  There =
are no dents or dings in the body at all.  The engine sounds pretty =
good, but it has a ticking noise.  Is that normal?  Also, it seemed to =
hover up and down about 50-100 rpm at idle.
Can anyone give me an idea of what a good offer for this car would be?  =
Also I'm thinking of using this car as my 'everyday driver'.  Does =
anyone have any comments on Delorean's as everyday drivers  (ie:  =
insurance nightmares, or maintenence problems) ??  How reliable are =
these cars as everyday drivers??
Thanks

Subject: DML: Hood is pinching fascia
       In this issue:
        _SUBJECTS_
I recently had the hood lift pistons replaced on my '81 DMC.  The
mechanic
said that the pistons he used were slightly shorter than the originals he
removed.  I have noticed recently that the hood is pinching the fascia on
the
driver's side everytime I open the luggage compartment.  It does not
appear
to be catching and bending the fascia on the passenger's side.  Is this
problem caused by these shorter lift pistons?  If not, does anyone have
an
idea what may be the problem and what solutions are available?

The bumpy transition period for the DeLorean Mailing List appears to
over. Casualties included digests #497 through #499. I believe only about
a dozen people got those and I am trying to get copies of them myself to
re-post the pertinent messages to the list.
During the period in which those digest were generated, a few messages
got through unmoderated - including one offering a book on "Male Sexual
Secrets". If you one of the dozen or so that receive this message and
were offended by it - I apologize, it's for that very reason the DeLorean
Mailing List is a moderated list. If you're interested in the "Male
Sexual Secrets" book, for yourself or to give as a gift, I'm afraid I
can't help you.
I am still doing a bit of tuning on the list to make it easier to read
(ie - no more disclaimer at the end of each message), and appreciate the
kind, encouraging words from those of you that sent them to me. Those of
you that had complaints, particularly those of you that used profanity to
make your point, please join the AMC Pacer Mailing List.

Subject: DML: 'idle speed regulator' & 'different GRP moulds ?' & 'RPM relay'
       In this issue:

Idle speed regulator.
Our DeLorean had some unregular behaviour when idling. The RPM shoot up to
2000-3000 whithout touching the throttle. I checked all the wirering and
found some connector pins that where pushed back (somebody else on the
list
had already mentioned this particular problem). After repairing the
connector the problem seamed to be solved (I havn't taken the car for a
ride
so I am not sure jet, but in the garage it looked fine). However I noticed
that the idle-speed regulator is always making a humming noise and is
vibrating when the contact key is in running mode. It did so before and
after I repaired the connector. Is this normal ?
Different GRP moulds ?
I happend to see a '83 DeLorean this weekend, and I noticed a difference
to
our '81 model which I didn't know of. The GRP body around the engine
compartment on our '81 model (VIN 01095) has a fine textured surface on
the
part around the engine cover. You can see the texture through the rear
windows. The textur consists of a grid of small bubbles about 1 mm in
diameter. The '83 model I saw had no texture at al. The GRP surface was
just
flat. This indicates the use of different moulds. I guess that there have
been multiple GRP moulds to keep up with the production of about 40 cars a
day somewhere in autumn '81. I can imagine that the textured surface might
have been discontinued to cut down the costs of the moulds.
Of course this is just guessing. Does anybody know something about this or
of other differences in the GRP-body's ?
RPM relay
I have a defunct tachometer. According to the wirering diagram the meter
is
connected to the RPM relay behind the passenger seat. What does this relay
do, and how can I test it ?

Subject: DML: FS: Early '81, 5-Spd, Black Leather
       In this issue:
        _SUBJECTS_
I have decided to sell my 1981 DeLorean DMC-12. It is a late May 1981
model (VIN #01529) with black leather interior, 5-speed manual
transmission and approximately 37,000 miles. I used the car as a daily
driver for 2 1/2 years until purchasing a new car last November.
This DeLorean has the grooves in the hood, fuel flap door and locking gas
cap, but the windshield with the radio antenna was replaced with a later
OEM windshield two years ago after a rock cracked it. The car is not a
concours original in any way - it was painted red by a previous owner,
and I have installed an alarm, Alpine CD stereo, Centerforce clutch and
140+ amp alternator. Previous owners also added a rear spoiler, brushed
aluminum wheels and lowered the suspension a bit.
The car has proved itself to me to be a fairly solid everyday driver when
maintained properly. I had planned to garage it for two years and do a
complete frame-off restoration that would include stripping the paint and
rebrushing the car. However, the demands on my time and my career goals
have forced me to rethink this. If the car was restored the way I wanted
it would be worth $24,000.
The car does run now, but it needs a new water pump and possibly a new
brake master cylinder before I would consider it safe to drive regularly
again. In it's present state I am asking $11,500, but will consider
reasonable offers.
If interested contact me via email (DeLorean2C@xxxxxxx) with your
questions and I will provide more info and history on the car. I can also
be reached at home evenings and weekends at 573-886-7695.
Thank you!

Subject: DML: Appearance of engine area...
       In this issue:
        _SUBJECTS_
Does anybody know of any way to clean up the appearance of the area
around the
engine compartment?  What I'm specifically referring to is the black
fiberglass
(?) area below the quarter panel glass (the rear pontoons?).  Mine are a
bit
faded and scratched; I don't care about the faded part as much as I care
about
the scratches.  Is there any safe method to buff out the scratches?  I
would
just paint the area, but it looks like it would be a pain to get a even
coverage with the way it curves downwards, and with the close proximity
to the
quarter panel and glass.  I thought about just using a buffing compound,
but it
looks like it would get embedded into the porus surface and never come
out.
Thanks for any input,
Luke
