I have the feeling this thread is on the way to blocks-ville, but I'll
throw in something I haven't heard yet... since CD-R media is so cheap
nowadays, what if someone put together an HTML presentation in a
Mac/Windows friendly format and handed THOSE out? It could include
links to the DML, vendors, and individual sites deemed worthy (up to
someone, I suppose,) some video and photos of various meets, DMC-12
statistics, and perhaps most importantly, a good, detailed explanation
of the events leading up to the creation of the DeLorean car, JZD's
arrest, trial, and acquittal.
I realize that might be a little spendy to produce, but if a couple of
vendors could get on board to sponsor, and clubs could be in charge of
distribution, it seems like it'd be a pretty effective way of getting
the message across (as long as it didn't get pushed on people like AOL
CDs or something ;-) Maybe an attractive (but cheap) paper jacket could
provide some important facts and a Delorean historical summary, just in
case the receiver doesn't get around to putting the disc in his/her
computer.
Just my input, I'd be happy to help in a limited capacity if anyone else
with the know-how and connections wants to get the ball rolling.

Amen! Since I first bought my car, my best friend has always said that I
need a "fact sheet" about the DeLorean to keep in the car. We should
include a quick history of the company "started by former GM exec,
manufactured in ireland, company fell because of 'fill in the blank'". We
should also include facts, such as:
1. Stainless Steel body
2. PRV V6 engine
3. 5 speed manual and 3 speed automatic
And most importantly, a section on JDZ that dispells any drug rumours and
explains what a horrible footnote in history all the rumours are. It's a
damn shame that so many people in the world only know of the name
"DeLorean" as either a Back to the Future car or as "that drug guy". It's
time to set the world straight.
Ken, let me know if any of my design/computer ability can help in this
cause. Guys, let's all pull together and not let anyone see a DeLorean
again without learning the facts.

I will have to agree with Andy on this one. The best thing to do is to read the
books available. Specificly, I would stick with "De Lorean", "Hard driving",
"Dream Maker", and "Stainless Steel Illusion".. These are the best books, and
to get the full effect, I would reccomend reading them in that order. Once
you're done, read "De Lorean" over again, and alot of bits and pieces from all
of the books will click together.
Was there any one thing that took DMC down? No. It was unfortunetly a
combination of a number of things that caused the demise. When you start
reading up on the subject, you begin to wonder just how it could have ended.
While there were a some mistakes made here and there in the form of things
that either should, or should not have been done, there wasn't a single action
that caused any sort of a domino effect.

Very nicely done.
I do have one question though on anothet part that DMC Houston is re-
producing...the Radio mounting bracket. Why aren't they painted or
powder coated black? I was going to purchase one until I saw what it
looked like after another Delorean owner installed it in his car. A
lot of bare steel showed through and he had to remove it and paint
it himself. Is that what is required before installing it, to paint
it?

I met a guy tonight who said the following information was in many local
papers around here (NJ). He said that last week Donald Trump bought JZD's
old estate from the current owners. He plans on dividing it into 25 seperate
25 acre estates, with the rest being used as a golf course. The main house
is to be used as a headquarters. This sounds very much like the plans that
were already laid out for the estate. Does anyone have any other info on
this or can someone confirm this?

Subject: Free DeLorean frame
Hello there.
Since I've welded up a new custom frame for my car, I won't be
needing my original (standard transmission) frame anymore. It's in
the driveway, and I'm getting rid of it so I can plow. I'm offering
it up for free, unless there are multiple people interested in it.
Then it will go to the highest offer, just to resolve the
competition. I will not solicit bids; I don't care what it goes for,
as long as it goes.
Also included, attached to the frame are the front and rear
suspension, hubs, brakes, steering rack, fuel tank including
pump+sender, transmission linkage(not transmission), various hoses
and tubes. There are two non-DeLorean wheels installed for rolling
purposes. Add two and it can roll around in your shop. If I deliver
it, I'll stick casters on it so it can roll.
The frame is pretty rusty in the usual trouble spots. . You can see
a closeup of the worst section at

The car was rear-ended at one point, but the frame deformation has
been straightened since then. The impact was mild, as the fascia
survived it.
You could restore this frame if you're looking to get a new frame on
a budget.
The fuel tank is okay. The shift linkage is okay.
It all goes as a unit, unless nobody is interested. If it doesn't
go, I'm cutting it up and sending it the the recyclers. I'd hate to
see that happen.
I can put it on a trailer, and deliver within a 500 mile radius, for
$2/mile, or you can pick it up, or pay someone else to deliver it.
Either way is fine.

Steve, Your correct, An alternator or anything on the car ( Not just the
Delorean ) can work one day and not work the next. That's the mechanical age
we live in. My alternators have only been out for less than two years. So far
I have only heard of two actually going out and I have sent out almost 75 of
them and two to Japan. But the main problem I have seen other than UPS
throwing them around is wiring. The brown / yellow wire ( light Wire ) is the
one that has to be hooked up to the alternator and a lot of the time the
brown wire is hood up and it will burn up the regulator in about 30 sec. I'm
not blaming anyone, and I know it can be overlooked and I haven't said
anything about mechanics quality, but I can tell you this mechanics have
wired up more wrong that the individuals because they are un familiar with
the DeLorean set up and some won't read the instructions. They feel brown or
hot wire goes to regulator. ( Wrong ). This has happened several times. Some
of the other problems I hear about is the wiring that has been mutilated in
the past by others. The wires cut off or break in the wiring loom and so on
and the dash battery light is out.
I have overnighted parts for local rebuilders to fix, I have told people what
part to have replaced to get them back on the road the same day. I also test
them and run an endurance test on them to see how much the current / voltage
drop will be if you think they arn't putting out enough.
I feel De Lorean vendors go to a little more extreme to bring a higher
quality product to the De Lorean market.
Yes, It's not bullet proof, but if you see what I see and hear going into the
boxes at your local auto stores you would not be surprised why they have a
20% faluier rate.
Mechanics don't build them and the assembly people are not to blame, it's
the way mangement of the rebuilders suppling the auto stores are told to
recycle used parts. Did you know that a rebuilder get's 100% write off credit
from the taxes if you return a rebuilt alternator or starter. Something to
think about.
You may now see why I'm a little more passionate about a very critical part
of our car.

The clamps that hold the coolant pipes are called Bundy clamps and
there was a piece of rubber in the clamp origionaly to keep the clamp
from rubbing a hole into the pipe. Just go to an auto parts store and
get a sheet of thin rubber (or a plumbing supply) cut it up into
strips and wrap it around the pipe under the clamp.
The pipe on the left with the otterstadt switch has the clamp behind
the switch and the switch pointed down.
The bleeder screw is in the thermostat housing at the top of the
"coolant pump" just to the left of where the right hose connects. It
is under a piece of the throttle spool bracket. It looks like the
bleeder nipple on the brakes with a hole in the middle. If the hoses
are origional they should all be replaced, same for the belts, idler
pulley bearings, seals and gaskets.

I just completed a tune-up on a "D" and I found after 30,000 only 3
valves needed adjustment and it was very minor. The valves don't
change all that much. If you need a lot of adjustment to quiet a noisy
valve I think you will find bigger problems. BTW I find the procedure
in the manual hard to follow so I just make sure when adjusting a
valve that the mate in the cylinder I am working on is open, that way
I can be sure the one I am adjusting is closed. That ticking might not
be a valve. When you get the valve cover off look for signs of past
overheating, coked up oil, sludge etc. Check oil pressure and do a
compression test to check the health of the engine. Mechanical
problems with the motor are rare but if the engine was abused
(overheated or run with low or never changed oil) all bets are off.

The company went under basically because the British
government,who pretty much owned the manufacturing
part of the company,pulled the plug on it and refused
to give JZD any more money.A new conservative
government came into power in the early eighties and
were far less likely to keep throwing money at DMC.
Also the timing was bad.There was a recession in the
states in the early 80s so people weren't about to buy
sports cars.
Also the initial build quality of the cars was
poor,resulting in bad publicity for the car.They were
also quite expensive compared to other sports cars of
the time.
But I too often wonder what the car would be like
today if they still made them. When I see a new
Porsche drive past me and I think a "new" DeLorean
would be comparable to it in terms of performance and
comfort.

I'd like to know this too. When I did my installation allmost
2 years ago I cut up my existing bracket to take my
DIN-sized head unit. Hacking this up was quite some
work and not something I'd really like to do myself.
Two weeks ago I installed a new radio into a car of a
fellow Dutch owner as a favor; I had experience ;-)
He had bought a reproduction, but had to paint it himself
too. When we started installing it we also found that
it would rattle considerably; the poprivets were not
tight enough so I had to tighten them...
The originals are spot welded.
Over all the bracket is quite OK, but for $125,- I would
have expected the front bit to at least be black.
The fit of all the holes and such was perfect,
allthough we had to elongate the DIN-slot about 3mm
to get the sleeve for mthe radio to fit properly.
The guy I did the installation for would have left the front
bare Aluminium if his radio had been like that too.
Unfortunately it had a black front panel...

This is a good idea. If someone puts something like this together, keep
it under 50 megs, so it can fit on the wallet-sized business card cdrs.
Those are a lot easier to give to people, and the odd shape and size make
them far more likely to be interested in the contents.
Also, if it's designed using standards, like html with inline jpgs and
perhaps some pdfs, it'll be friendly to more than just Windows and Mac
users.

Thats about how much I had to file on my DMC Houston bracket too when I did
my radio swap back in February. I also noticed that the hole thats cut out
for the a/c fan switch isn't cut right for some reason, and it makes the fan
switch sit on an angle because the bottom part of the switch doesn't fit in
the hole, its too large. Maybe thats just on my radio bracket?

worth what we have to pay for it with shiping, tax and this bad Euro.
(Though it may be worth it when you earn dollars instead of this stupid

Just give me some time, right now I have to make the plans for the door lock
module and the
schematic for the automatic governor readable.
But so far I can tell you - replace the transistors by some darlington types
like BD679 and the 1k basis resistors by 10k ones and you're done.
Like I said - 15 minutes and a beer, that's it.
I'll make a better description of it in the next days and it will be posted
here.

the modification you described sounds interesting to me. i never
disassembled the modules, but i will do it in the winter season. my
electronic knowledge is very good and if you could send me the wiring and
specs of the required parts i could modify them.
by the way, do you have a wiring of the fanzilla module? the price is very
high for this little gadget and i think it will e also no problem building
one if i could get the proper schematics.

you're right, I repaired about 10 Door lock modules and each of them had
worn and burned relay contacts. And the relays are also the reason why the
selenoids burn and therfore the power door lock system fails.
If you wanna do something good for your car and its battery, simply replace
4 parts of the module and the current consumption during standby is lowered
about more than 90% !!!! During stanby the module draws 13mA just to check
the switch inside the door if the selenoids shall be activated or not. New
sytems in cars are developed to draw less than some few micro amps during
standby, that's about 1/1000 what that door lock module draws !
Anyone who knows a little about electronics can do this modification which
is invisible from outside. Send me an email if you're interested, I will get
you the plans in a (not only by me) readable version. The parts cost less
than one dollar and it takes 15 minutes with getting the beer from the
fridge to replace everything.
I also developed a simple solution to protect the selenoids from burning
when the relay contacts stick together. After 5 seconds this little tiny
item reduces the current from about 10Amps to some hundred mA ! You will
only recognize that the relais stick when youre doors don't lock anymore.
But then your selenoid still are ok, while without that part you will have
to replace the windings inside the selenoids. By the way, a boring job.

If a door lock module is over fused which most are, then rebuilt,
remanufactured or new can cause a fire. If I repair one, I replace the 2
relay's in the black box and replace the diodes and check for any other
component failure.
DeLorean owners buy relay kits for the car, but very seldom does anyone ever
mention the two relay's in the door lock module. They are normally the worst
and none ever gets replaced because you can see them. So, yes if your over
fused and never replaced the relays you stand a chance as Steve say's of
causing a fire.
