Sounds like your driving yourself nuts. You can't take it with you....In my
mind the car is to enjoy as much and as often as possible. The splendid
condition is your good fortune and for your benefit. If I were you I'd enjoy
it the way it was intended to be enjoyed. You have equity in the car.
Maintain it. Give it everything it needs when it needs it and your equity
will remain. It's what it's worth to you that's important. Having something
you value highly is of no benefit if you live in constant fear of loosing it.
There is no reason that car can't look and perform the way it does now with
50,000 or 100,000 miles on it. Protect the frame from corrosion and the
interior from sun. The rest is simple....
On the other hand, I know that in my life, everything I own is for sale.
Including my Delorean. It's the price thats the issue. If someone offered me
more than it was worth to me I'd sell it. There's 36 Deloreans for sale in
the US right now on TraderOnline. You could probably replace it functionally
quite easily. And if you could do it and have money left in the bank when
you're done....why not.

Drive it. Deloreans are meant to be enjoyed by the owner and the general
public looking at it. What's the point in looking at it? Use it and relish
in the idea of having a really nice one. For me, I paid to have my car and
I am going to enjoy it. it also improves our car's rep by having one on the
road in excellent condition. You are kind of like showcasing it to the
public saying " this is how cool a delorean can be" Not " don't drive the
thing, would you like to see my museum.
Just my humble 2 cents worth. I love mine.

You are correct in thinking that the cooling fans cycle on and off but
when you have the A/C on they run continuously. If the A/C is off and
the fans won't stop the Otterstadt switch may be faulty or your
cooling system may just be running so hot that the switch won't shut
the fans off. Should run cooler then 220 degrees-closer to 180. You
could have air in the system, a partially plugged radiater, a bad
cooling fan, a loose fan on a shaft, a fan running the wrong way etc.
Depending on inside and outside temperatures and the level of Freon
and the adjustment of the pressure switch the car may be running
normally.
Since you just purchesed this car and you don't know the service
history you may require a cooling system service to replace old parts
and flush with fresh Anti-Freeze. It would also be a good idea to
check the Brake and Clutch fluid, it is supposed to be changed every 2
years.

Mileage does matter to some people. Assume two identical cars in all
respects, the one with lower mileage is certainly more desireable TO A
DEGREE. If the "low mileage" car hasn't been used regularly or worse
won't run then it isn't more desireable. Some insurance companies
limit the amount of mileage you can accumulate in a certain period and
depending on your State and how it is registered may also limit you
but a 20 year old car with less then 1,000 miles per year or 20,000
miles I think qualifies as low mileage. I have seen cars with less
then 1,000 miles that need A LOT of work and I have seen cars with
20,000 that wouldn't need as much. 100,000 miles is a whole lot
different then 20,000 on a 20 year old car, condition is the major
determining factor at this point in time, besides who trusts mileage
with the crummy history of the angle drive?

This weekend I fixed my Speedo drive for the 5th time in one
year...
To get it working I spent 3 hours assembling, testing,
disassembling, testing other things, reassembling etc. etc.
untill I finally had it working.
For how long? Nobody knows...
Might be a year or even two, on the other hand it might just break
down after 2 miles of driving again. Meanwhile I've spent well
over $500,- dollars on replacement parts and repairs and have
had it working for little over 1500 miles, while putting more than
4500 miles on the car as far as I know...
As a backup I'm going to install a Bike-speedo capable of
300kmh speeds with a readout in KMH instead of miles.
This way I have a KM-odometer, a KMH speedo AND I get a
readout at 85mph/140kmh+ speeds...
Might seem a good idea, but I'd much rather have a working
speedo on my dash. I anctiously await the Digital Speedo by
DMC Texas, but as I understand this might take more than a year
before it hits the market.
Maybe James can elaborate on this? I'd be willing to take a
prototype and function as a "Beta-tester"...
As for the mileage, I'd say drive it! Having 5000 miles on it or
15000 isn't that much of a difference. Putting 50,000 on DOES
make a difference.
Also ask yourself the question whether the torment of not driving
it weighs up to the supposed increase in value...

I've been on this list for over 5 yrs now and it is amazing how many people show
support for a project and then when the time comes disappear like a fart in the
wind! Then to cover the costs some prices go up and people wonder why.
I don't even have my car yet and I have been supporting the vendors ( even the
"non-vendors" ;-) and when I get my car I will keep supporting both. And for
those items that no vendor carries . . . if it's within my means I will do it
myself .
Most people are familiar with the "Rule of 20" . . . well there should be another
Rule of 20 applied for those who plan on embarking on a project for the "delorean
community". That is to only expect 20% of the 100% who showed the initial
interest to be there in the end.

I bought my car with only 7,300 miles on it. I too wanted
to "preserve" the lower mileage "image" of my purchase. The largest
problem for me was service as it was about 250 miles round trip to
have the car worked on and.... the Delorean shop that performed the
work, is well known for never solving any problem on the first,
second, third or even fourth try! As a result my car now has about
10,200 miles on it.
After some careful consideration, I decided recently that if I were
going to purchase a new Delorean, I would not be as concerned as to
weather the car had 4,000, 10,000 or 15,000 miles as long as it had
all of the necessary maintenance to make it road worthy. I have seen
more low mileage cars, including mine that have had significant
problems than higher mileage cars.
I would prefer the mileage to be low enough that the car did not
suffer from wear in the obvious areas. If the seats, interior and
outside condition was maintained and it still looked new, then
anything less than 20,000 miles to me is still low mileage.
I have decided to drive mine, enjoy it and maintain it. Naturally,
since I do own several other cars, I shall try to keep the mileage at
a reasonable level. In my case, 1,500 miles per year would more than
reasonable, would demonstrate that the car is being exercised, kept
in running condition and would allow for significant enjoyment. With
the above formula applied to your car, you would have over ten years
of enjoyment before arriving at the 20,000 mile mark!

Looking at the Minichamps model, I'd like to purchase one that has
the same # as my car's VIN. I know that Houston does not have it, and
I have asked a couple of sellers of eBay who have the model. None had
it either. I'm quite content with the Sunstar model, so the
Minichamps one with a matching VIN would be more for the purpose of
owning it to say I do, rather than for enjoying it (just being
honest). I'm also quite turned off the the model when I called the
company Minichamps directly. Thinking that this is a company that
deals in models of classic cars, maybe there was someone else out
there like me who may want a model that matches their particular car,
for whatever type of model they make. But I guess I was wrong because
they have never done anything like this before. A man who barely
spoke any english answered the phone, and was quite rude. When I
inquired about purchasing a model with a specific #, the man
replied "That's impossible, you can't." Now I realize that when they
distribute product, they don't nessisarily know where it will end up.
Let alone one with a specific serial #. Now I deal with broadband
products, so I've seen when we recieve bulk shipments of modems in,
and they have sequencial #'s. So thinking upon these lines, I realize
that my higer VIN would be in a later shipment, and I might be able
to track it from there. So when I asked the guy when the shipments
were sent, and who they were sent to so I could track them down. The
guy then immediately snapped back "WHY!". So I then explain to him so
that I could track them down. He then says "I told you, that's
impossible!" And then continues to mumble incoherently. I'm not a
rude person, but seeing that I was dealing with a severe case of
incompetence, I just said "Thanks", and ended the call there.
I'd like to get my particular VIN # in the sun star model, but I can
see now that isn't going to happen. But for those that may be
interested, I have discovered that the person targetopeat (AT)
aol.com has VIN #'s 500-1400. So I help that information helps
someone out there. Other than that, I only hope that Minichamps put's
more effort into their models then they do their customer service...

The greatest pleasure of owning this car is driving it! I recently met a
guy who had his professionally restored at DeLorean One, and he drives it
every day as his only car. Using it is not abusing it, and the car was
never intended to sit as a decoration. I'll be driving mine until it's
simply no longer feasible. Thanks to the vendors and DeLorean specialty
shops out there, I should have many happy years driving my dream. You are
very fortunate to have come across such a pristine example, which is why I
believe you should make the most of your experience. There has been no bad
day that a drive in my DeLorean can't cure.
Just have fun with it, whatever you choose to do!

A clarifacation on this previous post. The A/C WILL cause the fans to
run continously ie, as long as the compresser is running the A/C
circuit will override the otterstadt switch and run the fans. When the
compressor stops if the otterstadt switch isn't hot enough then the
fans will stop. (Fanzilla changes this a little.)

Ian and List,
I'm sure Tamir will be posting photos of his "award winning" model
in an update to his site very soon. I saw it for the first time at
one of the Delorean Midwest Connection functions and it was the first
(and still the best) custom SunStar model I have seen (in person).
As far as the details about Tamir's customized SunStar model, you do
not need to look much further than photos of his car.
From our last conversation on the trip home from Memphis, Tamir said
he plans on a few "major" updates to both his website and my projects
website, including photos and videos from Memphis. I'm sure he has
enough material for several updates throughout the summer months.
Tamir has been busy with finals and graduation, but he assures me that
he will be posting the progress photos of the two new projects that
were seen in public (and in action) for the first time, in Memphis.
Both the Delorean Convertible (or Roadster, for now - thanks Dave S.)
and the Delorean Hover Conversion are about 80% complete. Although
both were not completed, I could not wait until 2004 to show them.
D Rex's Debut at it's first all Delorean event was great and I thank
all of you who took the time to stop by with praise and encouragement
with all of my current Delorean projects. There are several more
Delorean projects to come, so check the websites often for progress,

I went back to home depot and told them that the axxess+ 51 key
worked. The guy said that it wouldn't work because the original key
wouldn't fit in the key slot thing they use to measure it. I had him
make a copy anyway and it worked.
