This is correct. My Alpine came with an outer sleeve that could be mounted
in the dash. Then to remove the radio you just flip pins on either side and
the radio slides out. There were two reasons why I didn't use the sleeve:
1) the cable coming from the fender mounted antenna was too short to slide
out the radio. 2) The sleeve wasn't very well designed. It was meant to be
mounted by bending metal tabs to hold onto the DIN opening. Such an install
would be good enough for a hack shop, but not for me -- too many squeaks &
rattles and nothing to support the back of the radio from falling down.
Since it was just a sleeve, there was no room to put fasteners (even rivets)
through it without obstructing the fit of the radio inside. I didn't want
to do any welding or brazing, so I just bolted directly to the radio. This
was meant to be a second mounting option anyway.
On the subject of radio mounting, has anyone thought to do anything about
the face plate for the a/c controls? While driving last night I noticed
again how much light shines through on the edges. I'm thinking that the
next time I have it out, I'll paint the edges with black paint to stop it.
Otherwise it looks cheap.

On the subject of engine swaps / upgrades, here is an interesting Alpine
that is being auctioned on eBay as item # 1806232910
The relevance as applied to the DML is that they describe the engine as
being like the DeLorean and it is turbocharged. Isn't this the same kind of
engine that someone in the Northwest put in their DeLorean? It isn't too
far from where I am, so I'm tempted to go take a look at it and maybe
photograph the engine.
Rear engine, rear wheel drive
Fiberglass body
Turbocharged SOHC V6
2,458 cc (PRV engine, same as Delorean just with more HP)
Power SAE net 180 bhp @ 5,900 rpm (more with the performance exhaust)
Torque SAE net 200 lb-ft @ 4,000 rpm
0-60mph in 6.7 sec.
Standing 1- mile in 15.4 sec.
Top speed 147 mph
EPA city driving 19 mpg

I remember you saying this was a gift..
Back when I ordered my bracket from the MidState DMC club, they were
offering it in both Black and Stainless. I opted to get the stainless.
The Houston web site does not seem to offer this as a option, but it's
possible that it may have been and your wife ordered the SS version. Why
not call them and ask?
Don't paint it black. It is supposed to be textured, and I think this can
be recreated with the correct process and paint. The Mid-State DMC club did
offer a replica that matched the stock look (I saw it in Ohio). However, if
it were me I would call Houston and ask. If it is not what you want, return
it.
I don't think Mid-State sells the part any more (they don't like to compete
with Houston I guess), so you may not have too many other options.

Below (http://24.46.235.195:81/images/temp/) is a picture of my original OEM
console with the new DIN cut replacement console from DMC Houston on the
right. My question is, When I install the new DMC console, it does not have
a black finish like the original. I originally realized this problem when I
bought the console, but DMC Houston assured me that the vents, and radio
cover all surface areas. This is not true.
If you see below, the red arrows show areas on the ORIGINAL console that are
visable to the naked eye (even when the center console is on the unit) and
those SAME areas on the replacement one now look like silver sheet metal.
What is the correct thing to do here? I bought this $150 replacement so that
the car looks unmodified. If I use this unit, IT WILL STAND OUT.
Should I spray paint it black? Will that still look good when done? What
have other people done? What does DMC Houston recommend to other buyers?

Subject: Leaky Radiator
On my DeLorean, I have noticed that the radiator is leaking ant-freeze only when it sits; not when it is running. I crawled under the car and there is no anti-freeze leaking out of any of the hoses , but there is anti-freeze leaking out of the bolts that holds up the air vent, right under the front bumper. I notice puddles of anti-freeze right by the front driver side tire. That is the only place where it leaks. I was wondering is worse comes to worse and the radiator needs to be replaced, is that a special made radiator or will another radiator from another model car will work just as good? Thanks a lot!

Great list.
I've never enjoyed such levels of support and knowledge with any other car
I've owned.
Makes the whole experience that much more appealing and enjoyable.
The unique combination of the car itself, and the list that supports it,
makes everything to do with the DMC that much more fun and rewarding.

Check the original antenna wiring diagram in the manual. The stock unit uses
a relay in the compartment behind the drivers seat that after market units do
not require. Run right from the radio to the antenna and wire it as per the

Same situation here. Whenever the D sits for a period of time that
lets it get cold, the brake fluid starts to leak. On my car, the leak
appears to be from the rubber seals between the brake Master
Cylinder, and the brake fluid Reservoir. The problem with this leak
is it will eat the epoxy off of the chassis on both sides. Some of
the fluid will drip down between the gas tank, and the chassis. To
check and see if this is your problem, pull the access panel in the
trunk to inspect it. Be wary if the gas tank has a 'wet' look to it.
You can also turn the steering wheel to get visual access to the side
of the chassis.

it being crap were nothing to do with the product itself?
It'd leave a bad taste in MY mouth. I'd want to have nothing to do with it and distance

But, 20 years on, to realise that out there are thousands of people who love and cherish

the failure of your dream, but simply that they still love living that dream. It's THOSE
people I'd really like to meet and chat to, and simply to be around.
Hopefully this is what John realised last year, and is why he's planning to attend

Walt and others....
As a side project to go along with the backlit instrument cluster, I
am hoping to create a new AC panel (both plastic panel and decal)
which will be of much higher quality than the original unit. Also,
the decal for this panel with be of the late 81 style, which in my
opinion is much better looking than the early ones or the currently
availible replacements. This will be illuminated by LEDs in a similar
manner as mentioned by someone on this list a while back. PLUS, it
will also be compatible with a new dimmer switch to be used for the
backlit instrument cluster, so they both will illuminate evenly.
A few more items which are in the works, are clear inserts for the
control knobs on the AC panel (so you can see what your selecting at
night) and new decals for the headlight and hazard buttons which WILL
NOT fade when pushed on.
Look for all of this to shortly follow the release the backlit
instument cluster which will hopefully be availible twords the end of
this year (but dont hold me to that). (And there may even be a sneak
peek at Memphis).
If anybody has questions about any of these items, please email me
directly at ultra(at)isd.net

Hmmm...I did it an easier way. I got a 105 AMP alternator from a
chevy cavalier and I used the original adjustment arm. Only
modifications needed was to sut a small amount off the alternator
mount that attaches to the engine and install a new plug onto the
harness. Alternator is the same size as the alternator.

I've run across textured black spray paints for use in trunks. You should
be able to get it at most auto parts stores. Why not try some of that.
Paint a beer/soda can first to make sure it looks like something you could
live with, and if it is, just lightly sand and clean the radio bracket and
paint it.

Kevin,
Mark is correct, I/we (MidState Delorean Club) no longer make the
replacement radio bracket because the guys at DMC Houston are now making one.
What I used to do to achieve the "original" black grained finish on the
bracket is to use a black "wrinkle" type spray paint. This stuff is available
at most auto parts stores and by playing with it and trying a few different
techniques, you can come real close to matching the original finish.
Good luck, Marty

Subject: Re: brake fluid leakage
Hank,
Did your car have this leak before you had DMC Joe service the brakes? If
there was a leak at the calipers, he would have seen it. I suggest taking
all the wheels off and inspecting again for any sings of leakage. There is
a chance that your leak could be elsewhere in the system such as in one of
the flexible hoses running to each caliper or at one of the "T" junctions in
the front or the rear UNDER the car. When my master cylinder sprung a leak,
it leaked at the junction between the master cylinder & the power assist.
The fluid leaked straight down, so it wasn't obvious by looking on the top
side. When I saw the puddle on the floor, it looked like a coolant leak.
When I pressure tested the coolant system, I DID have a leak in that area.
I tightened the leaky hose only to wonder where else the leak was coming
from. It was the master cylinder, not the coolant system. If your brake
system has only a small leak, maybe there are enough surfaces around the
frame & fuel tank to soak it up before it could drip on the floor. If your
master & calipers are very old, you might ought to go on and rebuild them.
PJ Grady sells a float that isn't an exact replacement but can be made to
fit by changing the connectors. With it, I have some peace of mind knowing
that I might have some warning before the brakes are compromised.

Mileage doesn't matter much.
Whats the vin # ?
Has it been driven regularly?
Is the frame rusty up front.
Even though it's low miles it's probably gonna need the following very soon
unless they've already been replaced.
Brake Master cyl, clutch master cyl, clutch slave cyl, tires, shocks, hoses,
alternator upgrade, radiator, coolant flush, electrical upgrades or repairs
(locks, fans, fuel sender etc..), probably caliper rebuilds front and rear,
maybe TAB's (trailing arm bolts), door struts, trunk struts, louvre struts,
tail light circuit board upgrade, steering col lower bushing, belts, O2
sensor, etc...
Hows the headliner? Sagging? Has the foam deteriorated?
How are the door weather strips?
Any dents or dings?
Optional side stripe?
Five speed or auto?
Do the locks work?
Interior lights work and shut off on timer?
Clock work?
Radio original and working with display?
Antenna, electric, windshield or fender?
Louvre cracked?
Head light facia sagging?
Any sun damage?
Windows work and on tracks?
Window switches good?
Rear defroster and switch good?
Mode switch for heater and air functioning?
Noisy blower fan motor?
Good heat?
Good air?
Speedo and all guages work?
Does the oil pressure gauge dance around?
Recalls / updates performed? (door guides, crumple tube reinforcement, ball
joint recall, throttle spool/cable recall etc..)
Original OM and sticker?
Does it leak when it rains?
Is the steering column universal joint stiff?
Did it ever sit with fuel in it?
That was fun....
next.... :-)

and at a truck service/shipping yard (First Class Truck Service) at the
intersection of Paradise and Grant Line roads, about a mile from where I
live, there sits a DeLorean. The proprietors of the yard know very
little about the car and don't seem to know who the owner is at all, but
from looking at the car from somewhat of a distance, I can tell the
following: It is an '81 with hood lines and fuel flap, and seemingly a
black interior. All four tires are going flat and there is a blemish of
some sort on the passenger-side door. There's a small bump on the
driver's side quarter panel above the glass, so I take this to mean the
car has the retractable radio antenna. I do not know if it is an
automatic or a manual, and I didn't get close enough to get a VIN
number. However, the plates on the car indicate that it hasn't been
registered since 1983. Also, I was told that the car has a blown engine.
Since the owners of the truck yard don't know who the car belongs to,
I've been trying to find the owner myself. It's probably a long shot,
but this list seems to have a diverse collection of DeLorean owners as
well as lurkers, so I hope somebody on here can help me. Thanks in
advance to anyone who can.

Marty,
With the Accel coil is it necessary to keep the ballast resistor and relay
wiring, or can I run it at a full 12 volts all the time? I'm in the middle of
an engine compartment wiring purge and I'd like get as much of the
unnecessary wiring out as I can.
Thanks,
Jim

I had read David's comments about the original coils, and also read John
Hervey's as well before getting to Marty's posting. All of our restored and
refurbished cars get new OEM 20 year old coils, as do all of the performance
engines we install - and we have not experienced any problems with them at
6500+ RPM. Dyno testing of the cars backs this up, as Marty mentions.

Travis, You must not have looked very far. The Delorean 150 (150Amp) on my
web site is a small Delco bolt on replacement with a three year warr. No Mods.

I'll bet it's your front sway bar bushings that are squeaking mine did. Take
them out, clean them up and grease them well with a silicone grease. I'm a
Ford technician and we have a grease entitled "silicone brake caliper and
dielectric grease" that wears long and well.
