There is some intersting information about particular VINs in the DMC
production chronology available on the DMCNews web site. According to
DMC records, #686 was a DMC company car assigned to E. Cafiero.
From the archives, it is interesting to note the number of early-VIN
cars that were used as DMC company cars as well as engineering cars
for key suppliers. If you have a low-VIN car, you might take a look
at the VIN list since there is a chance that your car was a DMC
company car.
The cars prior to about 560 appear to be mainly engineering cars
(with an occasional company car thrown in). It is likely that the DMC
warranty coverage starting at car 560 reflects the fact that the cars
prior to 560 were primarily engineering cars that DMC did not want to
incur warranty liability for.

You are confusing the heat stove or air intake preheat system with
"carb heat" that is used on airplane engines with carbureators. In
airplanes the air must be heated because not only is there a temp drop
because of the venturies but you are also evaporating fuel there which
also lowers the temp (sometimes below freezing). On the Delorean the
fuel isn't induced into the air stream until after the air sensor
plate. The preheat system is only going to be active when it's cold
and the engine is warming up unless it is extremely cold in which case
it may stay on. It's only purpose is to help the car warm up quicker.
Once the engine is warmed up the engine itself "preheats" the air as
it enters the manifold before injecting fuel into the warmed air. If
you are experiencing carb ice then the air is probably supersaturated
below the dew point and close to freezing, an uncommon situation in
most areas of the country (on the ground). This almost never happens
on fuel injected engines anyway. I agree that the intake is
restrictive but just tinkering with it alone won't do very much, what
goes in must come out so if the exhaust is also restrictive it wil
become the limiting factor. In fact you can gain more there because
heated gases expand so the air going in needs more room to get out.
The exhaust system must be oversized compared to the intake to
accomplish this. Also it is usually not a great idea to combine the
two cylinder head exhausts, they should be kept separate but it was
done on the Delorean so there is only 1 catalytic converter.
Back in hot-rodding days the first thing you would do after changing
the tires was to put headers in because that gives the biggest bang
for the buck and is necessary for all other improvements.

I finally had my 83 DMC shipped to my home here in Charlotte, NC. Now
the fun and expenses begin. While it only has 2500 miles on it, and it
in great condition, there are the 20 year old worries to be updated.
Can anyone provide a local shop name where I can get my car road worth
again? Also while the car drives great (as it has been stored for the
past 20 years in a climate controlled garage), I know it will need a few
adjustments to become a 2nd weekly driver. For my thought are I bought
a DeLorean to enjoy driving it, and not just looking at it.
Updates needed:
Door Struts, Coolant bottle, oil change, Radaitor flush, Transmission
flush / checkup, new tires (the originals look great, but I don't trust
driving on 20 year old tires).
Thanks in advance for all this groups help. This is a great resource to
have.

Yes Marc, you are right about Dusty being a very early body.....A "cave
painting", well actually it was a thick piece of tape stuck under the wiring
loom under the "Fury ashtray" thingy, has the date 29th Jan 81.......the
second day of production!
I have recently been talking to Mike Moore, who was the managing director of
Wooler Hodec" , who did the RHD conversion work, he told me that they
(Woller-Hodec) had a separate Secret contract with the DeLorean factory to
chop up , and part out some new, early cars that had badly formed under
bodies. They just couldn't get the panels to fit properly.
The British press got hold of this story somehow and a version of events
was printed up in the "Daily Mirror"
The only reason that this "diss-assembly was sent to Woolers was because,
cars were regularly going back and forth between the two sites and it was
thought it would be bad for factory moral if it were done in N.I. plant.

[MODERATOR NOTE - while we normally dump "Somebody Sell me a Cheap DMC" ads I thought this was reasonable enough to post. We'll still tend to dump such posts though---ds]
While rather new to the DMC list, I've been a DeLorean fanatic for many years. I am the president and founder of The Geek Group (www.thegeekgroup.org) a non-profit science and technology education Group in Kalamazoo Michigan. For one of our upcoming projects in the new year we would like to renovate and modify a DMC-12. This would not a restoration, this would be the creation of basicly, the DMC-13. We would incorporate some new designs and ideas (like computer integration, performance upgrades, etc) while building of the platform of the original DMC-12.
I cannot imagine destroying a perfect DeLorean, that would just be wrong, especially with so few remaining. What we're looking for is a marginal DeLorean, preferably one we can get donated in exchange for a serious tax writeoff (we are a 501-c-3 corporation), sponsorship of your business, etc. The only requirement is that it be somewhat functional and the body not be destroyed, driveable is a big plus.
If anyone knows of a DeLorean about to be put out to pasture, or gathering dust somewhere that we can save from the scrapheap please let me know. I have 50 engineering kids here that will give it a loving home :)
What are your thoughts on such a project? I understand the complete restoration of a DMC-12 is a massive undertaking, but bringing it back to showroom stock isn't our goal, we want to use the imagination of our students to take the next step in an already futuristic car.

are called Neighborhood Automotive and are located on the south part
of town. The mechanic there has worked on Deloreans before and has

Subject: Cold start problems
Hello,
I'm experiencing some trouble starting my D when it is cold - especially when it
drops below zero degrees.
Symptoms:
When I turn the ignition key the engine starts, but stops after a second - same thing
happens the second and sometimes the third turn.
Then, the engine starts and runs at a very low RPM - the car shakes and jumps up and down.
If I use the accelerator pedal the engine chokes.
After 15-20 seconds of shaking, the engine speeds up and reach normal idle speed, but it
needs to warm up 2-3 minutes before i start driving, if not - the engine chokes again.
What might this be? Cold start valve?
Anyone know the Bosch part number for the cold start valve?
