You are probably out of luck with the original frame. The engine could go
either way. It's not uncommon for the ugliest looking pile of metal to
turn out to be a fine mechanical engine. Unfortunately it requires a
little bit of effort to know for sure. Ideally you would take off the oil
pan, valve covers, and manifolds and inspect all visible parts (I'd say to
remove the heads too but they are so easy to warp that it is probably not
worth it). If everything looks ok you can probably squirt some oil in and
run it - having gone through the fuel system in the process of
disassembling the car to remove the frame :}

Value is not going to be high. In effect, the only thing on the car worth
keeping is the body and suspension. I'm thinking $3K if the engine is
ruined, $5K if it is ok.

It's really just a lot of work. You should really think of it as a
frame-up restoration project rather than a big part swap, as it will more
accurately reflect the scope of the project.

I wouldn't do that, unless the damage is either very minor or a DMC
specialist says it can be repaired from looking at it. You don't want
your frame coming apart!

The first delorean I saw was in back to the future, and I think its a great
movie, but thats not why I'm interested in buying one. I also saw a
(lowered) delorean in a car museum awhile back(in pretty bad condition, yet
on display) and I couldn't leave it. Everyone else walked forward and I just
stayed there glaring at it. Even though it wasn't the most expensive or
fastest, It was certainly the best for me. When I found out you could get a
delorean for 20k and less I was nicely suprised.

GlacierI recently bought a set of these stripes from Christoph Wirz in
Switzerland. I was happy to find them after searching for a while.
Although the stripes are about 20 years old they still adhered perfectly and
came with directions for application.

When I got my D in February, the heater would only blow one way... no
defrost, etc. All fan settings worked, but nearly all the air came from the
center of the dash. Ok, I rebuilt the mode switch, now I can redirect the air
as intended, but the flow is pretty feeble. A.C. just ooozes lazily out.
Defrost doesn't work any better, really, than when it didn't blow on the
windows at all. I usually ride around with the windows open, whether A.C. or
defroster is on or not. (I've been spending my cash on preventative
maintenance/replacement of safety items and mechanicals, not creature
conforts.) The fan sounds like it's blowing quite vigorously. I looked/
felt under the right dash and the hoses seem connected. No air gushing out.
But with the A.C. on, it felt a bit cool and breezy under the dash where you
cram your hand to reach the mode switch. Ideas anyone?

This might be the last of the Giugiaro-VW threads, but I thought I'd offer my
two cents. The Volkswagen Scirocco (yes, it's been mentioned here before)
seems to have more DeLorean similarities than the Corrado. The grill being
the most prominent.
Does anyone remember the '84-88 Isuzu Impulse hatchbacks? I don't know if
Giugiaro had any influence, but this car, from front to back seems like an
impressive and cheaper clone of the DeLorean. Again, the grill being the
dead-ringer. Check one out at the Autotrader.com page if you're interested,
there is a lot of similarity in shape, and the overall "swooping" look that
the DeLorean creates. Just my two cents.

Has anyone had this problem with their car, where the gas backflows
out before the tank is yet full? I have this happen three times now,
am I just not putting the nozzle in right? I have never had this

As I said, I'm only parroting back what Rob Grady told me. Chances are, if
you don't know about this service bulletin, then it probably doesn't exist.
If this is true, then I was probably told about an instruction sheet which
was supplied to dealers with the new locksets. I think Rob referred to a
template to show the cutting of new slots in the door sheet metal. So it
makes sense that it is really just an instruction sheet.

Nate,
I would suggest using the $20K rule. A perfectly preserved and maintained
Delorean with all the factory defects and weak spots and wear spots repaired
and restored is probably not worth much more than $20K. I would make up a
laundry list of EVERYTHING that should be done to the car (or pile of car
parts in this case) and deduct what everything would cost to fix. I would
take a wild guess that when you are through subtracting everything, you
would come up with around $6K to $10K for what this 'package' is worth.
For example, on this list be sure to include tires, a battery, refinishing
the rims, repainting or replacing the facias, everything to do with the fuel
system (mostly replace), everything to do with the cooling system (mostly
replace), everything to do with the A/C, new window motors, alternator, gas
struts, extensive electrical upgrades, total re-upholstery job, etc., etc.,
etc. and so on.
A good place to start would be to check out some of the web sites of
Delorean parts suppliers. I think Delorean Motor Company's web page gives a
break down piece by piece and a price marked next to everything that is
available.
Why am I answering this question? I probably know next to nothing compared
to the big name lurkers on this list. Well, that's my opinion. It's worth
what you paid for it.

Ah, I remember seeing a bulletin about the locks- it described how to enter
your key at and angle into the lock's 'dish' because the lock's little water
flap that covers the barrel did not open easily.
I do not have the 'dish'- that small indentation in the lock base so that
the key slides toward the hole if you miss (maybe this discourages drunk
driving? If you can't manage to get the key in the hole, don't drive!!)
The slots in the door are at the 9 and 3 oclock positions, but by the design
of the lock, it seems to me that they should be at the 12 and 6 oclock
positions. The lock also fits loose in the hole, making me think it's not
OEM, even if it is a replacement. The door lock key does not match the
ignition key- it's still a 2 key car. The car is an '81.
I think it's a little too hack to start filing/cutting the door to make the
lock fit. I wonder if I can find early model lock replacements- one where
the lock base notches are at 9 and 3 and the barrel that will connect to the
plastic piece on the inside such that it is vertical when not in use..
I guess I should just call the boyz and see if it's available...

I have a question about this overheating thread. My DeLorean has never
overheated, but the fans don't come on until the temperature gauge is almost
to the 220 degrees mark. It's never gone above that.
Living in South Carolina, it gets very hot here in the summer. It's not
unusual driving in stop and go town trafic with the A/C running for the gauge
to stay near the 220 mark. Is this ok? I've bled the system, but that
shouldn't be a problem since the fans are running because the A/C is on.
I've installed the fan fail bypass, so that's not a problem either.

That's a great idea, but I think it has one flaw; I don't think Giugiaro
speaks English. I saw him on a History Channel program, and he only spoke in
Italian. All of the other European designers and engineers they interviewed
spoke English, but Giugiaro had an interpretor. I could be wrong about this.

said below) and, I don't want to get ahead of my self, but woundn't it be
great to have the prototype stripes ready to order also? Instead of the 81

to prototype wheels, and other things, like the painted SS right fender, and

I just received an email from the DMC2 mailing list on the watch and have this to say. Delorean should give us more info because a 3,000 dollar investment is a little much when we know little about the car and have no gurantee it will even come out.
Think though, if it did, the effects it would have! What if it becomes a very popular top selling car? Original deloreans could go up in value yet at the same time if the new delorean really is 20,000 and really does go from 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and keeps the greatness of the original delorean, who(buying a car for a daily driver) would buy the original delorean at the same price with still problems having to do with a 20 year old car.
Personally, if the new delorean does come out and I haven't purchased an older delorean(very unlikely), I would seriously consider the new car. But, sometimes its hard to keep the same style as the original and I know John Delorean wasn't happy with the original(after his original ideas were taken away by lotus) so how do we know how DMC2 will turn out?
Hmm, what if it ends up like the sequal to back to the future?(although I liked it, the reviewers didn't take to it well, of course the reviewers didn't take well to the original delorean either)
Anyways, I'm very excited

My typical problem is with the gas automatically shutting off every few
seconds if fully inserted. . . I have always just put the nozzle about 1/2
to 3/4 of the way in.

I have some ideas......
1. The center vents have rubber boots that can/will come loose. Are they
connected properly?
2. Have you replaced the fan blower resistor?
3. Have you replaced the circuit breaker for the fan? This is especially
important for fan speeds 3 and 4.
These are just ideas. I hope they lead you in some sort of direction.

When I was shopping for my D last spring I did a lot of thinking and
research on the cost vs. condition question. I found a few Ds in
great shape for 17-20k, but I opted to buy a D that wasn't in perfect
condition for $11k (cracked windshield, some minor scratches and
dents). My reasoning was this, when buying a used car you NEVER know
for sure what's wrong with it; so paying a premium for a "perfect"
car is kinda silly since you don't know for sure if it's "perfect."
Also, if you plan on driving the car a lot, it's likely that you'll
collect a few scratches, or dents yourself; if you paid $20k for a
perfect car these day to day problems will likely give you an ulcer.
Only pay a premium for a D if you're a collector.
