Subject: DML: car for sale

Since the classified ads haven't been updated since January, I reluctantly
need to use the DML to help a desparate friend try to sell his car.  It
is a
1981 gray interior 5 speed, VIN 5999, with 45,000 miles.  It is not
currently running, due to an apparent lack of spark.  He is asking $10,000
and can be contacted by calling Lowell at 360-538-7491.

Also, in my ad for issues of Special Interest Autos with the DeLorean on
the
cover, the price should have been $5.95 plus $2 postage.  I tried to
change
that ad too, but no response.  James, what's the story?

has been one of the things that has fallen by the wayside. I hope to have
the situation remediedby the end of the month. JVE]

Marc,
Yes, as a matter of fact there is a listing that shows the vin# Owner, St=

kind enough to provide this list for us to check out and learn when our D=

Darren,
Any carpet cleaner will do the job. "Resolve" will do a good general
cleaning job. For imbedded stains we use a solution of "Westleys Bleach
White" diluted to a one to one mix with water. If you want to leave the
carpet with a fresh clean "like new" smell use "Odor-X" by Turtle Wax.

April 3, 1999 is rapidly approaching.

The Camellia Classic Car Show at Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile Alabama is
a
show you do not want to miss.

We have three owners who have pre-registered for the show, and two other
owners who have verbally committed.  Check out my web page for the
particulars.

http://www.zebra.net/~scottmueller/Web%20Page/CamilliaClassic.htm

The show organizer will create a class for DeLoreans if there are four
cars
pre-registered.  The photo ops are fantastic.  When we know who is
coming, I
will plan a time and place that we can meet so we can caravan in and park
together.

Bring your family, the gardens are wonderful and last year there was lots
of
activities for the kids.

If you would like me to fax the entry form to you, email me directly with
your name and phone/fax numbers.

This was a great show last year and I am looking forward to participating
again.

From: cooney@xxxxxxxxxxx
Subject: DML: fuel problem, poor acceleration

Purchased an '81 D, this winter. Had it trucked north from the
Carolinas.  Beginning to see why the former owner of this "excellent
condition" car pushed for me to have it trucked.  The archives haven't
produced an answer.

The fuel pump seems to work when it wants to.  There have been days when
I drove with no problem. There have been trailered home days.  At times
it will start, idle for several minutes then quit.  Sometimes it will
then restart, sometimes it will not.  Sometimes it will restart days
later.  Today it ran for five minutes, quit, restart for one second then
die.  After several attempts it will now not restart at all.

Warren in Texas has worked with me to find a solution but as yet, it's
not fixed.  So far, I have replaced the fuel pump relay.  The pump had
been running when straight wired with the relay out, but at this writing
it does not.  The fuses are fine. The coil has spark. Juice flows to the
fuel pump. The inertia switch has been by-passed.  The fuel pump was
replaced three years ago.  Am I missing something?  Suggestions?

Secondly, this car won't beat a bicycle.  Except for a few times before
the transport picked it up, the former owner did not drive it much and
had it in a dealer friend's showroom for quite a long while.  RPM's will
shoot up when accelerated in neutral, but 65 mph is the limit when
driving.  I checked the automatic transmission computer with the test
light method recently described. All systems go there.  D. One suggested
just running the heck out of it due to possible varnish buildup. No luck
so far.  Suggestions?

Lastly, does anyone know of a good shop in W. Pa. or E. Ohio? I am in
Grove City, Pa, midway between Erie and Pgh, east of Youngstown.  Sorry
for such a long post but I'd hate for this to be a trailer car. Other
than these problems it really is in excellent condition with all updates
done at D1. (under 30,000 miles)

Thanks much,
Mike

I am not exactly up to the idea of this but here goes.

I talked to the lady about Strawberry Festival and she is very interested
about doing it with the D's next year.  SHe mentioned a show in June that
she would like to invite you guys out to.

Here are the details as of today,

June 25th, 1999- (Time not known)Ribbon cutting ceremony with Governor
Mike Foster
4pm- Street dance to be held.
I am guessing that the street dance will include some sort of parade.

June 26&27 will be all day events.  I do not know what the exact plans
are.  The name of the festival is to be something like "Antique City of
America".

The woman I talked to told me she might be able to arrange some sort of
car show.  I told her I would let my friends on the DML know about the
event and I would get back with her at the end of the week.

I'm not to sure about this event but many of you may feel differently.
Please contact me direct at SteveDMC@xxxxxxxxxxx and we can talk about
it.

She told me that this will hopefully be the start of an anual even and
she needs something like the D to promote it.  Maybe we can help.

Mike,
Thanks for the details on your troubleshooting process. It make our job
much easier.
To save a lot of time let me ask you a couple of questions.

Question: When the car stops running or does not re start do you know for
sure that the pump is actually running. If not, either listen for it or
put
a test light on it.

When we have a "D" with the same intermittent problem we hook a test light
with long leads to the pump terminals and tape the test light to the
windshield. If the light goes out while the engine is running the problem
is isolated to the circuit between the relay and the pump. If the light
stays on the problem is in the pump or pump fuel supply.

The problem with your poor acceleration is probably in the fuel enrichment
circuit. After we get the engine running non-stop we will show you how to
correct the enrichment problem.

You changed the relay, so I assume you cleaned up all of the contacts.
You may also want to change the fuses (even if they are good.. the
blades tarnish with time).

Also, remove the pump, make sure there is no gunk in the tank, and the
hoses in the tank are in good shape.

Your not that far from PJ Grady.  There may be someplace in Ohio that is
closer, but I dont know.

When I first acquired my car it did the same thing.  I could always
start it if I fiddled with it long enough; I never needed top trailer it
home.  I assumed the problem was poor electrical contact somewhere in
the system, so I would jiggle all the relays and unplug - replug the
fuel pump connection a few times and eventually the fuel pump would
start.

One day while working on a different problem (bad start inhibit module)
I removed all my relays, opened them up, and gave them a good cleaning.
Five years and many thousands of miles later my fuel pump has never had
another problem.

For certain specific problems I know several good mechanics in the
Cleveland area.  For *any* possible DeLorean probelm you can go to Dave
Bauerle near Columbus or DeLorean Cadillac here in Cleveland.

Too bad you didn't have this car last October.  The DeLorean Club of
Ohio's 1998 Fall tour was a drive from Sharon, PA to Cambridge Springs,
PA, where we spent the night at the Riverside Inn . . . right in your
neck of the woods!

80 cars a day, instead of building cars to dealer orders. This caused =
cars to start stacking up in the distribution network that the market =
couldn't absorb. John's reasoning behind this decision was that he >
had a certain amount of time to start paying off the loans from the =
British government, as I understand. Sales in the summer of 1981, when =
the car was introduced, went very well.=20
2. Historically speaking, winter is the worst time for auto =
sales, especially sports cars. The winter of 1981 was especially bad, in =
fact I read somewhere that the auto industry as a whole suffered its =
worst selling season since the depression that winter.

Ultimately, John did over estimate the market for the DMC-12, but this =
didn't have as much to do with the car, as it did with the fact that =
every segment of the auto market can only absorb a certain amount of =
cars produced. The fact that John even got the car into production in =
the time frame he did was a miracle. Most first time buyers were willing =
to overlook its initial quality problems. All new cars, by the way, have =
some quality problems when they are first introduced, its just that =
established automakers have deep pockets to fix them, John was doing the =
best that he could in the time frame he was given. He had ,as most =
mailing list members know, a plan to add a turbo option and a sedan, but =
unfortunatly, time ran out for his company before this could happen. >
last thing concerning performance, John had already picked the engine =
for his car because of its price, performance and its reliability. When =
Lotus was picked to do the engineering work for his car, they added a =
steel backbone or spider to the cars roof to support the weight of the =
gullwing doors. Unfortunatly, this added about 500-600lbs to the car, =
which caused its performance to suffer. Honestly though, would you =
rather have gullwing doors or a couple extra MPH? Hope this addresses =
all your questions, Michael.

P.J.Grady is your answer. If $$ are a problem, talk to them. I'll bet a
way can be found to solve your problem & budget. >From personal
experience ( & I usually do all my own work on other vehicles) a
dedicated D repair business will do a quality job & save you many $$ in
the long run. Since I am on the left coast, Don Steger at DeLorean Motor
Center in Garden Grove CA has done wonders for my D. Oops, I forgot
Bauerle in Radnor, Ohio (740 595-3348), may be closer to you. Don't keep
messing around trying to self-solve the problem. After the car is
running perfectly, then learn as much about it as you can & keep on top
of any problems that occur. In the meantime, let an expert put it right.

The only thing in my experience that may help you, is when I bought my
Delorean new in 82.  While driving for 3,000 I had no problems, then it
just
died.  It wouldn't start.  I got it towed home and the next morning it ran
fine.  Then next day it was dead.  It was diagnosed as a loose connection
where the wire harness (connector) goes through the firewall.  It appeared
that a pin in the connector was pulled back enough to make a connection on
and off.  All that was done to fix it was to re-insert the pin fully into
the connector.

In other words, start looking at all electrical connection in the engine
bay
area.  Maybe on is corroded, loose or just pulled back.

There is a DMC illuminated key for sale on Ebay,

the picture on my WWW site

Does anyone have this key with their car ?
I have never saw THIS VERSION of the illuminated
key. Its nothing like the illuminated key that came with my car.
It just made me curious ?

I installed FANZILLA last year while at the DeLorean Expo in Los Angeles.
It works as advertised.  The fans come on one at a time and shut off one
at
a time.   The unit looks professionally made and was easy to install.  The
documentation that came with it was complete.

I have recieved a lot of mail asking for details about the Townsend, TN
show.
So if  James will allow I give the details for all. The show is May 1,
1999. (
yes the Blount County web site still lists last years show). The cost is
$15.00 for pre-registered cars (thru april 10th) $ 20.00 day of show. All
the
proceeds go to the Blount County Childrens Home. The hotels in the area do
give a discount rate for the show. Main staging area is the Best Western
Inn.
Dash plaques to the first 150 cars. There are three awards in each class.
Door
prizes thoughout the show. A short drive after the show. Last year about
75+
cars went on the drive. Picture 75+ British cars screaming around the
ridges
of the Smokie Mountains. After the drive there is a BBQ back at the Best
Western. Cost $10.00. I almost forgot to mention Friday night. There is a
gathering at the motel to meet each other and get a chance to admire, sit
in
and ride in about every make and model of British car ever made. If anyone
needs more info email me at ABatt10347@xxxxxxxx As stated in my previous
post
I'm not a member of this club, just someone who has enjoyed this show in
the
past. As of today looks like about 5 to 6 D's maybe coming.  Thanks James
for
the bandwith.

If the car runs fine when started than the problem in not related to the
fuel filter. Good cold operation and poor warm operation are usually
related to the warm up and or fuel enrichment circuit or youmay need a CO
mix adjustment.

Being in Colorado I don't drive my D in the winter.
It seems to act more like a run away sled than a sports car on ice.
Plus there are too many transplants from states without snow who don't
have the skills to drive in it.

I was able to get comprehensive ONLY insurance through my Farmers agent
for under
$100 for 6 months.  Yes, I have a good driving record and I'm 38 years
old.  The
replacement value is on the books at $15K(which incidentialy is more than
I paid
for it) but my agent said that's just a starting point and if I could
prove its
worth more I would have to work with the claims adjuster to come up with
the true
fair market value if something ever happened to it.

When I want to drive it I just call him up and tell him.  They cover it
for the
day, weekend whatever and charge me $4.50 per day which comes out to
roughly $800
for 6 months.
This works out great saves me money, and it helps me to be disciplined
and not just
drive the car every day to work. The last time I covered it for a full 6
months(last summer) it cost me $590. So I think depending on your
situation
coverage isn't really too hard to get or too expensive.

Hello to the DLM,

My name is Sharon and I am Lee Seiler's wife.

Lee has been very ill with the influenza this past week and must rest in
bed. I am not letting him work all night and most of the day on these car
models until he has recovered from his influenza. I help him with the
billing and shipping when I can. Let me reassure all owners of the model
cars that Lee is making good progress producing and sending them out, I
don't think any one understands how much work he puts into each one, but
for the next week no kits may be shipped, it all depends on how soon Lee
recovers.

I shipped (UPS) the last batch of models today for every one Lee contacted
for the correct mailing address, you should get your model in a week.

If you have any questions about you model cars please send your e-mail to
me.

Thank you

Hi Mike,
=20
I did't understand if you still would like to receive door panel removal =
instructions. About the divers door mirror : replacing the mirror will =
probably not solve your problem. To analise the electric problem, you =
can measure if a current is flowing through the door mirror switch, and =
the current received by the mirror. If the mirror doesn't receive a =
current, you'll probably have a loose contact in the roof. If this is =
so, send me a mail and I'll explain how to fix it. You can remove the =
mirror glass only, since it is glued to the mirror with double adhesive =
tape. Bend out one edge carefully, ontil you can stick a spatchler =
behind the glass. Ease it though hehind the glass, and try not to break =
the mirror further. You can use the broken glass as a mould, and get a =
new custom made mirror.=20

Good luck !

I'll contribute another silly question! Opening the engine cover on #2423

another pulls the handle inside the car. Is something wrong on my car, or
was this just a DMC oversight? Anybody know of a fix?
