Probably melted because it was positioned badly at some point, then
taped up and moved elsewhere. There are several different setups for the
battery/alternator wiring and the obvious one I use is one wire from alt
to starter (and therefore battery), then another from there up to the
post under the coil cover. Why use three smaller wires instead of one
big one? Flexibility. But you can get pretty hefty wires made up of very
fine strand copper these days. My local place has a selection of lengths
in both read and black. Never had a problem. Most recently did exactly
that on an Alpine GTA where the alternator wire was infuriatingly
difficult to undo becasue it was part of the main loom, you couldn't
undo the -other- end of it and pull iit through without cutting back all
the insulation on the loom.
