I highly and publicly recommend BitTorrent as a free, reliable, and safe method of filesharing. Sure, NNTP avoids direct peer-to-peer contact, and is therefore inherently safer than P2P protocols like BT, but I have a hard time believing that there is any real legal danger casually downloading copyrighted material via BitTorrent. I have been using it for personal downloads for a few years now, as have many of my friends and coworkers, and this is the first I've heard anyone claim the protocol is dangerous. I've actually been contacted directly by copyright owners (Paramount Studios and WB) and issued "cease and desist" letters when I used to be mmirror Suprnova.org on my web server, but the legal fact is that I wasn't hosting illegally distributed copyrighted material, I was hosting *links* to illegally distributed copyrighted material, so there was nothing they could do. I've never been contacted due to downloading. Either way, it seems to be a matter engaged in by the copyright owners, not law enforcement. IMHO, nothing to worry about.
