Well if they are simply not filing then yes you CAN turn them in and will recoup 15% of what is collected by the IRS. If though they are in fact filing something but not paying any of their taxes then they are in no hot water and there is no money to be given to you. Their daughter might have no idea really, and just blathering about being "cool". I guess in the end, what is to gain from you turning them in? Is it the satisfaction of screwing with an unknown family, or the feeling of nobility in bringing a thief to justice? Or is it a quick way to get some cash? I read your analogy about Mexicans, and yes Illegals are a problem... Why not come down here and just round up a few and make yourself feel better and leave the legals alone? In the end you need to weigh both sides and look at the ramifications of your decision. Yes you will get some cash that you may or may not use on your car (your choice anyway). But you will also wreck damage to an unknown families future (namely jail time for at least one parent). I am not condoning the act of not filing taxes, heck I pay tens of thousands in taxes each year, I would Love to take 12 years off. But the last thing I want to do to some family is split them up because they don't pay theirs, especially when I don't have a grudge against them (and believe me, jail is almost a sure bet, you want to send someone to jail for not paying their taxes so you can get new seats for your DeLorean?). Maybe if they had tons of money, were flaunting it around, and I had a problem with them then maybe, MAYBE I would consider it. But Josh, you aren't even involved with them, why mess with it? They might only have enough cash to make ends meat and use these rationalizations to get by paying the taxes? Who knows. I guess we might need some more data on this. We had a family friend that lost his business and didn't do his taxes for a short while and he went to prision for three years and before he went he was normal but after he got out he was in bad shape.
