A dodgy tappet will sound, well, tappety. Think striking a metal pin
with a small hammer several times per second. An exhaust manifold leak
makes the engine sound like an air cooled VW engine. Often silent at
idle, sometimes even quiet when revved in neutral, but always audible
when putting the engine under most load - eg flooring it at 2000rpm.
I sometimes use a length of hose which I hold one end to my ear and run
it around the manifold to find the leak. NB you won't hear it till
you're right on top of it, if it's the manifold gasket.
