Re: [DMCForum] Re: wheels shake update...again

Hi Rich,
I'm going to have my tires balanced again to see if that is the problem.  I just need to find a place that does it on the car.
I retorqued everything under the front of the car.  Upper/Lower ball joings (35lbs), tierod ends (26lbs), Swaybar to chassis (26lbs), and steering rack to chassis (19lbs..i think).  All those are from memory, but i'm pretty sure i'm right.  Make sure you have your manual before you do to make sure.
I also adjusted the steering joints (that connection from the rack to the column).  I removed the joint from the steering rack and made sure that the joint to column connection was fully secured and pushed all the way up to the "firewall".  Then I connected the joint to steering rack and made sure it was fully secured.  I then tightened up the middle connection (sorry for my horrible terms).  Tightening up all those removed the rattle completely.  I just have the imbalance now.

Erik,

The residual shake sounds like a tire imbalance. Even if you had them
done recently, have them checked again. You may have tossed a wheel
weight during the initial heavy shake-down.

Please pass detailed info on what you adjusted. I have some similar
handling symptoms and I'd like to check what you checked. I don't
have the shake but I have some squirrly sway. I also believe I have a
warped rotor.

reseated the steering rack to make sure.  I did notice that the sway
bar wasn't torqued down enough.  And also the passenger
tierod/spindle connection wasn't torqued all the way.  I also
reseated and adjusted the upper and lower steering column joints.
HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!!  It drives like a different car.  My squirely
rear end is gone, my teeth chattering rattle is gone as well.  There
is still a bit of a vibration at 60MPH, but after I get passed 65mph
it goes away.  If anyone has any ideas as to what the vibration might
be, please let me know.  I'm betting I need to take it to a place
that can balance my wheels properly.  Doesn't it need to be done on
the car?  Last time i know it was done OFF the car.
