I know there is bulletin board software that includes this feature
(two-way email support) because I helped write it a few years ago.
The specific application is called DigiPosts, made by a company called
Digi-Net Technologies (http://www.digiposts.com). It is a Java Servlet
that runs in any servlet engine (i.e. Apache Tomcat, ServletExec, etc.).
It is pretty expensive software, but *ahem* I have an unlimited
license sitting around somewhere *ahem* if anyone is interested in
reviewing it.
Otherwise, it serves as an example that it can be done; and it's really
not all that tricky either. In PHP (or any CGI scripting language) it
would be a little tougher, but I wouldn't imagine it'd be that bad.
After some cursory searching, I didn't find a phpBB module for it, but I
wouldn't be surprised to find something with a more in-depth search.

Jon Heese
