A compressed coil spring has enough force to rip a front fender completely
off of a 1980's Caprice and then still imbed itself in the ceiling. Ask me
how I know.
At the very least, when dealing with a spring whose safe removal is in
question, wrapping a piece of chain around the spring and frame, secured
with a good lock or screw coupled link, can limit the travel of the spring
should the compressor tool slip off.

So you're arguing against slipped tools now? Perhaps we should also
give up our wrenches -- they've been known to slip off fasteners. Pry
bars too.
Auto repair is not laposcopic surgery. Sometimes the tool slips.
Sometimes you even end up cutting, scraping, or bonking yourself.
Speaking of injuries -- little tranverse front wheel drive cars can
produce the worst. Took a hunk out of my hand this weekend replacing a
vacuum hose for a girl at church.
Should an external spring compressor slip off, I'd imagine the body
part most likely to be injured would be Josh's backside when he falls
away from the vehicle.
