It's very simple, you just cut a piece of metal to fit the open side of
the arm and weld it in place.  Any time you create a collum or box in
this case you will add stiffness to the component.  However the person
doing the welding needs to work slowly cause they could introduce some
major heat stress and actuly make the control arm weaker.
