Because it contributes to cavitation.  The new PJ Grady hose
is stiff enough that it would never begin to collapse under
suction, so having a spring in there helps nothing.

I originally put the spring in to stop the cavitation
because someone suggested it.  It turns out that most of the
cavitation was caused by hot fuel.  The hot fuel was caused
by a restricted radiator and an electrical problem with one
of the radiator fans.
