I've lived here for a few years now and am meeting more natives and
long-time residents all the time. When a hurricane comes this way,
people generally leave if it's above a Category 3, but for the most part
people haul their plywood out of storage and board their windows up
again. Then most groups of friends convene at the friend's house which
is on the highest ground. Most people have hurricane survival kits (I
have a cool never-needs-batteries flashlight, heh) with non-perishable
food in case power goes out for an extended period of time. I usually
leave if it's going to be a severe storm, but if it's Cat. 3 or above, I
choose to turn it into a mini-vacation, as long as I can leave before
the other people clog up the roads.
