I know I stated this before, but I think previous employers can only verify
employment and not salary. Can a potential employer find out how much you
really made? Probably so. The truth is that a greater percentage of
companies looking to hire new people only make the threat of a background
and drug test, rather than actually doing so since the testing costs quite a
bit of money. The people who are worried about the testing tend to back out
on their own.
Just a suggestion, but you should try sculpting your resume toward the
company you are applying to. Also, the people reviewing your resume will
have a tendency to put it aside if it seems to be written to cover a broad
scope rather than the specific position you are applying for. You can also
lower your salary history as well. People rarely get upset when they later
learn you know more than you stated on your resume. The reverse would be a
different story.
I hope that didn't come across as condescending as that was not my
intention.

I worked for Bell-Labs/AT&T/Lucent for 13 years
supporting their computer systems. Mostly Windows
based, but some Unix. Also did some networking,
routers, firewalls and such. Most of my experience is
in Microsoft based stuff.
In the past 18 months, I have sent out at minimum 15
resumes a week. I have had maybe 6 interviews. The
most common reason for rejection has been that I made
too much money at my previous job.. and although I am
willing to take a pay cut, they would rather hire
someone who is "Less likely to leave when the market
gets better".
Most of the jobs do back round checks, so lying about
my salary does not work either.
