In all seriousness, you should know the look, feel, and taste of
various auto fluids. Aids tremendously in identifying mysterious
puddles under your car (puddle location helps too):
- Antifreeze: Green (for us) and sweet. Very distinctive odor,
especially when hot.
- Brake fluid: Amberish to black, depending on age. Slick like ocra.
Makes your lips numb.
- Automatic transmission fluid: Bright red to black. Not much odor
until it overheats, then stinks worse of all. Is not viscous. Does not
numb your lips.
- Gear oil: Very viscous. Smells like cat urine.
- Motor oil: Not viscous. No odor, even when hot. Tastes like motor oil.
- Gasoline: Smells like gasoline. Tastes acidic. Evaporates and
absorbs into your skin quickly when rubbed between your fingers
(sometimes leaves a white residue behind).
- Water (A/C evaporator or trapped rain water): None of the above
