[DMCForum] Al plating with Au...

Al is normally anodized or alodined. It can be plated with Au but to
be successful and avoid flaking and peeling you need to plate with
nickel first. Better still is to zinc it and then plate with Ni. The
Ni provides an adhesion base for the Au. It's not that difficult but
the Al must be cleaned and prepped. People do it all the time. For
example, many places sell kits for Au plating of car emblems. Look on
the net, it's much more than a global poronograhy network you know ;)

Btw, I should have been more clear on the last post. Of course an Al
weld puddle will oxidize but so does all other metals. That's what
the shielding gas is for. Whether it's Ar or He in GTAW, CO2 in GMAW
(mig), or the flux on the rod in SMAW (stick) the weld puddle must be
shielded from the O2 in the air no matter the metal is being fusion
welded.

My name is Bond, James.... Nah, just call me Gary. Or any of the
insults given to me around these parts. If you ask nice I'll probably
respond.
