Side note:
Copper may work okay for the clutch line (lower pressures), but under no
circumstances should it be used for the brakes. Copper blows out very
easily and is illegal for use in brake lines in the US.

We had a similar experience and bought a portable pipe-flaring kit. Now
in situations such as yours, it's a 5 minute job to make a new hard line
out of copper pipe.
