Denis: Well, the best ones are always away from the tourists. ;) Dos Jefes on Tchoupitoulas is good. They usually have a band there and if it's too loud you can go outside on their covered concrete porch. Also a good place to go if you enjoy cigars - inside is a cigar bar complete with humidor. :) They also pull a pretty good Guinness, though you have to wait a few minutes for it to warm up. They also have a very good plate of fish and chips. The Maple Leaf on Oak Street is a good place to go as well, plenty of music there and not bad food. And Ann, whose name can be found in the men's room, still comes around from time to time. Donna's Bar and Grill on Rampart Street is also good, and their food is better than your average bar food. Now and then you can catch Tom McDermott or a good brass band playing. Be warned, it is down the street from some of those places which display pink triangles in the windows. ;) The Balcony and The Bulldog, both on Magazine Street, are pretty good places. I avoid the inside of The Balcony because it's too loud and filled with raucous college kids, but upstairs and outdoors you get a nice place to sit, drink, and eat ... not to mention a good view of the chicks who hang out at the coffeeshop across the street. The Bulldog is very crowded on holidays and weekends, thanks to its proximity to Universities and apartments, but has ground-floor outdoors space and a LARGE variety of beer on draught. The food there is good but IMHO overpriced given the quality. The Moonlight Café is a much quieter alternative than most bars, it being a restaurant first and bar second. I can't remember where it is but it is right off of Magazine if you're heading into town ... right after Magazine becomes one way in the direction that you're not going ... just veer left and park, and The Moonlight Café is on your right. I have also had The Columns Hotel recommended to me, but I have never been in there. Speaking from personal experience, between the availability of good cigars, liquor, beer, and food, my #1 recommendation is Dos Jefes. But keep in mind I've only been drinking legally for three years and I have many more places to sample. ;) Farrar buickhawk wrote: > Farrar, what is the best bar down there in New Orleans?
