I would think that a sandwiched shield would be fine. That's the type I've seen. Two layers of SS with an air gap between. A single layer could very well radiate heat right on through, although probably a bit cooler than with no shield at all. The air gap on a sandwiched shield acts as an insulator and will keep a lot of the heat from going through to the 2nd piece of SS.
