FWIW, I think Bill/Martin are both right unto themselves. LIke Bill said, it's the words used that are mismatched. Too often, detonation, pinging, knocking, & preignition are used interchangable to describe something wrong with the operation of the engine. Bill's talking about detonation, which is the same as KNOCK. Martin's talking about preignition, which is the same as pinging. Sometimes called "carbon knock" One happens when over advanced (ping), the other happens when too retarded (knock). Martin calls detonation "dieseling", which it very well may be. Spontaneous combustion would be more accurate, as dieseling implies there is no spark. A spark may occur and still have detonation.
