OK: concede there's a difference between two and I may have been using wrong term. I had whichever refers to spontaneous combustion. Only showed up on hot engine, or when car was lugged in 5th (timed at 10 degrees). Timed towards 13 engine never made a peep. Lost power band, however. Is no way to red line my engine timed at 13. Did you read my post Re: power timing? Exactly how it's done -- keep retarding spark until you lose control over flame, the move slightly back towards bottom. You want spark as close to top of cylinder as possible without losing control of combustion. That's precisely what I was doing -- trying to move spark towards 10, losing control, then backing off towards 13. Sounds like you're at other end of flame propogation -- advacing spark until *IT* -- spark -- causes combustion too soon, then moving slightly towards the top. If cylinder pressure or heat low enough, or fuel not too volatile, you could probably move it even closer. Power timing yields more HP, but at expense of a dirty burn.
