Jeez checksix, throw us a bone here or something. It's such a simple argument, but regardless of the # of URLs supporting Martin, Bill maintains that "advanced" is closer to TDC than "retarded" (assuming we're BTDC). FWIW, It may have been (unknowingly) something that Bill had previously posted that made me initially agree with him about which was which. We all agree that advanced timing can cause detonation. I think that, from the layman's view, it makes sense that the later the plug sparks in the cycle would increase the probability of detonation through a 'dieseling' effect. >From everything that everyone says (except Bill), when the spark plug sparks earlier, the chances of detonation increases. Why the hell is this? "Knocking" can be caused by the flame propgating too quickly in an advanced engine-- but what causes preignition, an uncontrolled explosion in the cylinder? Does this happen before the advanced spark due to elevated head in the cylinder or after the advanced spark due to ignition delay or misfire? These are all questions that I haven't found answers to yet... Jim On Wed, 22 Oct 2003 02:00:48 -0000 "checksix3" <jetjock11@xxxxxxxx> writes: > Amazing...absolutely amazing. It's indeed inspriring.
