You're both confused.  Bill had it right the first time, Martin
misunderstood, and Bill misunderstood Martin's misunderstanding.

Advanced is 10 degrees according to Bill, which is where the detonation
was happening.  Retarding to 13 made it go away.  
So you eliminate pinging by retarding.  
Charge temperture also has a factor, as does the shape of the
piston/cylinder.
