Sure you're not using terms backwards? Moving spark closer to TDC
leads to pre-detonation.

Old fashioned "power timing" (which I have to do to one of my high
mileage Lincolns because outer ring of harmonic balancer has shifted)
involves moving spark towards TDC until valves start to clatter, then
advancing just a hair.
