[DMCForum] Basic reactor theory (was: Re: DMCForum.org)

Trust me on the particle stuff, after all that time, it was drilled
into my head. I'm sure you can verify this on the internet somewhere.
I may even still have my old qual notes around somewhere. Like you
say, neutrons bounce around and split other atoms. They can do this,
because they travel at the highest velocity and be slowed down only by
hydrogen atoms. I'm not 100% positive they are the heaviest, but I do
know that they travel through the most stuff so they're heaviest or
fastest.

You are correct, there would have to be heat exchange. I didn't go
into all that becuase it's considered NNPI. Naval Nuclear Propulsion
Information. It's verboten to discuss the specifics. What I spoke of
so far is freely available at any library or on the web. Actually, so
is the NNPI stuff but I still won't discuss it in an open forum. I
encourage anyone to read about it though.

It is also true that the Russians had substandard shielding. I don't
know what they used though. The reason they are so unwieldly though
(IMO) is because they are often longer, and even more often -twice- as
wide as even our biggest sub, the Trident or Ohio class.

Get this: We had a sonar tech who -was- a commercial/utility company
reactor operator. He told me a little about how they operate. When
asked why he didn't just jump into the Navy nuke program he told me he
was sick to death of nuclear power and wanted a change in life. Strange.
