I recently tested the vacuum advance solenoids from 4 DeLoreans, and all of them leaked air through the base of the electrical connection. Some leaked worse than others but ALL of them leaked. Two of these cars are daily drivers, and fixing the leak made a noticeable improvement. I just sealed the leaks using oxygen sensor safe silicone caulk. I knew I had some vacuum leaks on my daily driver, so I used a hand vacuum pump to see if the line supplying the ignition advance and CPR held vacuum. It didn't. It lost vacuum as fast as I could work the pump. The culprit was the vacuum solenoid. I was going to scarf one off of another car when I found that one leaked too. So I try yet another car and that one also leaked. Moments later a friend drove up in his DeLorean, and as he got out of the car I said, "You have a vacuum leak!" And sure enough he did. On hard acceleration his valves rattled. He thought his valves needed adjusting. But the leak on his solenoid was bad enough that it wasn't advancing enough under hard acceleration. All of these solenoids leaked faster than I could work the pump, so that is a pretty significant leak. Y'all go check your vacuum solenoids and report back how damn clever I am. :-) Walt Yahoo!
