Just popped out a couple of spark plugs. Ash white. Am definitely running too lean (set fuel mixture the way Volvo boys do, but apparently wasn't quite right). All the pieces fall into place: -Lower performance after CPR warms up (my ONLY onboard device affecting fuel mixture, don't forget) -pre-ignition in 100 degree sunshine -HOT engine (ask anyone who races cars: "fuel cools") May have been chasing vacuum leaks when I should have been twiddling mixture screw. Will road test & adjust after lunch. BTW: remembered during incredibly boring sermon (sorry God, but you were there too and don't tell me you were exactly riveted to the pew) what a BMC (Bill & Martin Motor Car Corporation) would look like: When my fire department buddy went to Peru saw an old Chrysler Imperial repowered with Toyota 4 cylinder of some ilk. Poor thing couldn't get out of its own way. Engine huddled in bottom of compartment like a frightened kitten. Am afraid when we go into production that's what buying public will have to choose from.
