Apparently missed your octane thread while at work, but Andrei is correct: octane refers to gasoline's ability to resist ignition by anything other than spark. High octane fuel is actually less volatile than low. Have had trouble in summer sun on I-95 running less than 93, but am timed rather close to TDC. Also don't know what kind of advance curve my Renault distributor has (may be lower than stock DeLo). After sun sets 87 or 89 is OK. Have an 11:1 460 in one of my Lincolns that was designed for 97 octane (high test in the 1960's). Will run on 93, but not in interstate sun. That's what octane boost is for. Note that higher octane may be harder to ignite with your weak ignition. In bad old days of 8,000-12,000 volt ignitions higher octane could lead to carbon buildup, which I guess would raise compression and increase cylinder temps making it OK after all...
