It's your converter. Compare to manifold heat on passenger side. Have no idea why those things run so hot. With mine gutted, exhaust tips are still too hot to hold, but not by much. Cool down within minutes. Engine itself is another story (cools down by next week). Lincoln put Mark V converters next to manifolds. Driver's side sits right under steering coupling disc and brake master cylinder. No heat shield either. Am sure that's why both go prematurely bad. Own 5 Marks, replaced on all (compare to truck w/ 190,000 miles on original coupling disc and second master cylinder). Idling, my DeLo fans kick on within 5 - 10 minutes.
