I pull mine out all the time since I'm fumbling around with my engine. You're right. Undo the hose clamps and pull the electrical plug off of it. I wouldn't say there's a "special" consideration regarding dirt. Just don't get any in there. Tape a sandwhich baggie over the cold start valve and mixture pipe.
