> I tried soldering it with brazing rod and a torch, but the alloy just wouldn't stick.<< Walt, There are several alloys that can be used to braze Al. The trick, as in any soldering or brazing application, is using the right filler and flux along with prep and technique. They're used in A/C repair all the time. Email me if you want to know more. Most Al alloys are best welded using the GTAW process. (Commonly known as TIG) Some alloys (such as 2024) cannot, due to their Cu content. AC power must be used with Ar as the sheilding gas unless it's a thick workpiece, then He or a mixture is used. If it's real massive then preheat will be needed. GMAW can also be used but for real quality I always use GTAW. There is nothing like an inverter based power source to make welding Al a pleasure, my Thermal ARC ProWave is great for this kind of work. You need to buy one and learn how to use it. ;-) Gary Yahoo!
