I post a lot of off-topic stuff here, but this one is serious. Keep in mind I am still learning the De Lorean, but have experience on many other cars. I have often noticed a bad starter will smell like burnt bacon. Seriously. The starter will indeed get warm after repeated cranking. Try to get as close as you can and see if it smells burnt. Also, have you verified the voltage at the starter? Again, keep in mind I am still learning the De Lorean, but I have seen other cars have so little power that the engine barely turns over but as soon as the spark hits it fires right up and the alternator will take over to supply power. I do not know if this works the same on the De Lorean. In conjunction with what Walt said previously about checking the plug wires, see if the plugs themselves are wet after you try cranking. Oh, just thought of this, do you smell fuel from the exhaust while cranking? Looks like I burned a vacation day for nothing. This thing isn't going to start. I've positioned the distributor both ways and it won't catch. Bill, at DMCH asked how fast the engine was cranking. Well, the truth is, not very, and it has to have some speed if it's going to catch. I've cleaned all the ground points, battery connections and such. I've got a new Optima battery @ 700 or so cold cranking amps and a trickle charger that has the 50 amp "start booster" function on it. None of that makes it crank over any faster. After cranking for only 5-10 seconds the starter is pretty warm to the touch. If anyone else has any other ideas I'm all ears. Yahoo!
