As long as you can turn the crank 2 rotations by hand without any valve interference, you know that you should have got the timing chains on correctly. If the engine ran ok before you stripped it apart (I mean apart from the overheating) then ignition and metering components should be okay. BTW when you were "in there" did you strip down the distributor and re-lube the bob-weights? If you haven't yet put the intake manifold on, I suggest you do this.
