You could also check the heater core. If your heater works but water is not circulating, then the thermostat is stuck/broken. You can tell if water is circulating because the pipes to the radiator will get hot. If the heater doesn't work either, you may have converted the pump into a spinning wheel and a whole bunch of chiclets. the overflow tank cap might be "too weak" if it fires out coolant.
