I also freed up the intake by removing the mixture valve and putting some flexible piping instead. If you're messing there anyway AND it's legal to do so (it IS in The Netherlands; Cats are only required after a certain year) I'd say go for it. The 10 to 15hp claimed seems a bit steep to me, but the engine IS more responsive to the pedal. As for hollowing out a cat; it can be done, but then you'll get turbulence in the empty housing, decreasing your gain in power. Ed's pipe is smooth on the inside, so the gasses flow better.
