You can run as many batteries as you can fit into the car. When the generator in my Karmann Ghia went out at the worst time I drove around for 3 days with 6 batteries, and would have to switch from one to the other as they went dead during the drive. Just don't leave the lights on cause it would take forever to recharge a half dozen batteries.
