Mike, To answer your question, Yes I do think that enough air was getting in to the manifold to create the poor/rough idle. The reason I believe this is that I took it apart and put it back together three times with the original gaskets and had the exact same results every time (And the bolts were all tight). The first time I made the gaskets and installed them, she started right up and idled perfectly.
