Can't let this post go by without at least a comment. I purchased an 81 new in 82 - vin6350. 15 years later I purchased an 83 (16867). It has fewer idiosynchrasies than my 81 had. It is true that it was assembled for Consolidated Industries and that it was after the "death" of the factory, but there is NO indication it was "assembled on the fly" or by "disgruntled" management. The ONLY "mix and match" parts I am aware of are the interior pieces. And, frankly, I love my two tone interior. Having had correspondence with several other "high vin" 83's, I can only tell you that they all were very happy with their cars.
