Due to fuel costs and emissions controls, it has been in the
manufacturers interests' to produce smaller and smaller engines that run
more efficiently. That's why our smaller engines put out
disproportionately more power per unit displacement than US engines. I
don't think they're cheaper. It's just the direction manufacturers have
been forced into (and no bad thing)
An example are the car diesels. By far and away the best diesel engines
come from France or Germany. Why? Because there've been tax breaks on
derv for years encouraging the use of diesel cars on the continent.
