Perhaps you are thinking of the AMC 5 year buyer protection plan? Introduced in the mid 1970's, it trumped every warranty offered by other car companies. Wasn't standard -- 12 month/12,000 mile was -- but it could be purchased as an add on. I'm not aware of any other company offering such an option at that time.
